Did you know Corfu is ancient Scheria - the legendary home of the Phaeacians in Homer’s Odyssey? 📜
According to Greek tradition, after escaping Calypso’s island, Odysseus was shipwrecked on Corfu’s western shores - with many believing it happened right here around Paleokastritsa or Ermones.
Exhausted and washed ashore, he was discovered by Princess Nausicaa, daughter of King Alcinous, who brought him to the palace of the Phaeacians. Their hospitality changed everything: they gave Odysseus the enchanted ship that finally carried him home to Ithaca.
And the legend doesn’t end there - Poseidon, angered that the Phaeacians helped Odysseus, supposedly turned their returning ship to stone, creating the iconic islet of Pontikonisi (Mouse Island). 🔱
