ESSENTIAL ISLAND INFORMATION

Skiathos is only a tiny Island, 12Km long and 4Km wide but has at least 65 beaches and a vibrant town, with plenty of shops, bars and tavernas.
To get around you can walk, drive, use the local bus, hop in a water taxi or take a road taxi. As we recommend car hire for your stay at Katafygio, you will have a vehicle and the opportunity to explore the whole Island.
If you want to try the buses, the service is excellent, running every 20 minutes in high season and starts with bus stop 0 at the end of the new port in the town to bus stop 26 at Koukounaries, right at the other end of the Island.
The water taxis run from the old port in the town and stop at a few beaches along the coast. The run from the town to Koukounaries takes 20 minutes and costs about €6 each way - great fun and worth doing.
Walking and hiking are very popular activities - Katafygio has a hiking path running past the drive way and there are specific maps showing all the routes.

There is so much beautiful scenery and quiet beaches to discover - in your car head out from Katafygio, towards Kastro and then on to Kechria and Ligares - a truly stunning day out with lovely views, swimming and lunch, in one of the tavernas on the way. For Kosmima guests, follow the road signs from the town for Kastro and then on to Kechria.
Again, we can give you plenty of ideas for exploring the Island.

SUPERMARKETS, SHOPS, AND TOWN

To access the town, shops and supermarkets Katafygio guests need to head back down the steep hill. Kosmima guests - you are right in the centre!.
There are 3 supermarkets, 1 at bust stop 3, 1 on the road to the airport ( this is the biggest and best) and the third one on the road in to the town, opposite the EKO garage. Parking is difficult at the latter, so we suggest you use one of the other supermarkets.
When you are ready to explore the town we advise using the car park behind the fire station. If you head towards the town and take a left after the bean cafe, drive past the fire station and take the 2nd right.Once parked, walk straight ahead towards the sea and you will find the port.
The main shopping street is called Papadiamanti street and starts where the main ferry terminal is.
There are 2 ports - new and old. The yachts moor up in the new port and the tourist charter boats in the old port. The old port is where you go to buy tickets for day trips on the bigger charter boats and the new port also has sailing trips available but on a more private and smaller scale. Each boat has it's own sales desk on the quay side.
There are so many lovely restaurants to choose from in the town - be brave and head off into the cobbled streets where you will find plenty of wonderful tavernas.

LOCAL PLACES OF INTEREST

PARISSIS WINERY is very close to Katafygio and can be reached on foot and by car. Access on foot will take about 15 minutes. Kosmima guests can take a a taxi or if you have hired a car or bike, head towards Kastro and follow the Parissis signs.
Here you can have a guided tour of the vineyards and take part in a wine tasting session. Highly recommended. Very popular so reservations are advised.

EVANGELISTRIA MONASTERY is the biggest monastery on the Island and you can visit it for free! It is a courtyard of beautiful buildings surrounding a church and well worth a visit. Access is by car of foot - approximately 2km from Katafygio, along the tarmac road. Kosmima guests can follow the signs from the main road, if in a car or take the bus that goes directly there - this bus is found next to the main bus terminal 0.
The open air cinema showing Mama Mia is a must for all Abba fans - they have a page so you can reserve seats or go to the desk outside the cinema to buy tickets.
Plane watching is another favourite with a lot of guests - walk along the new port and follow the sea round to the right and keep going past all the fish restaurants - about 1 km. You will come to the end of the runway and you can sit in the Amaretto bar in between arrivals and departures! Beware of the jet thrust when you are standing by the runway - it has blown people off their feet!
The Papadiamantis museum is right in the centre of the town and will give you an insight in to Skiathos' most famous son.

LOCAL RESTAURANTS AND TAVERNAS

Skiathos town is full of many fabulous tavernas and restaurants, all within walking distance from Kosmima.
Step away from the main street and head up the cobbled streets to find many trad Greek eateries - too many to recommend!
There is a favourite food area of ours at the end of the new port - follow the road to the right, along the sea edge and head to Bakaliko and many others in the same strip.Great for fish and mezes.
There are 2 restaurants very close to Katafygio and both within a 10 minute walk-
PANORAMA - An authentic Italian style restaurant with stunning views. The food is excellent with plenty of choice.Well worth a visit. This is situated on the downhill road towards the town.
PLATANOS- This is a Greek style taverna, serving traditional food and also has great views.If you take a left from the dirt road on to the main road and keep going, past the turn to the town, you will reach it within 1km.
