Could you tell Greece from Morocco? 🌿🎬

At first glance, some of the landscapes in Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey might be difficult to place.
The film was shot on real locations across several countries, meaning that Greece shares the screen with some very convincing stand-ins from elsewhere.

So we decided to play detective.

And surprisingly, some of the best clues aren't in the architecture or the scenery — they're in the vegetation. 🌿

An argan tree can give Morocco away.
Black volcanic landscapes point towards Iceland.
And the Mediterranean scrub of Sicily can look remarkably similar to southern Greece.

But in the southwestern Peloponnese in South Greece, the landscapes around Pylos, Voidokilia Beach, Nestor's Cave and Methoni Castle are genuinely Greek.

And if this has made you curious to see them for yourself, our Spring in the Peloponnese and Western Greece: Wildlife & History journeys with Naturetrek Wildlife Holidays explore these landscapes beyond the screen.

What if one of the most sustainable travel choices you could make wasn't where you travelled—but when?

Travelling during spring or autumn helps extend the tourism season beyond the busy summer months. It reduces pressure on popular destinations while supporting local businesses, creating employment for longer periods, and encouraging a more balanced relationship between tourism and local communities.

At Natural Greece, this principle is embedded in our Sustainability Code and reinforced through our commitment as a Travelife Partner. We believe that responsible tourism is about creating experiences that benefit visitors while respecting nature, supporting local livelihoods, and contributing positively to the places we visit.

Sustainability isn't achieved through one action alone. It's the result of many thoughtful choices—made by travellers, local communities, guides, and businesses working together.

Because every journey leaves an impact.
Let's make it a positive one.

This summer you probably searched for shade, water and a little breeze.

Now imagine being a wetland, a forest or a migrating bird facing the same heat — without the option to escape.

Across Europe, rising temperatures and prolonged droughts are placing increasing pressure on the ecosystems that quietly support life around us. Wetlands shrink, forests dry, and wildlife faces a changing world where familiar seasonal patterns are becoming harder to rely on.

But spending years in nature teaches us something important: ecosystems are not only fragile. They are also incredibly resilient when we protect and restore them.

The choices we make as travellers matter. Supporting local communities, respecting protected areas and experiencing nature responsibly can help create a future where tourism works alongside conservation.

We explore these connections in our latest blog post.

It was 5:40am when the first track of the morning were spotted.

That's the thing about these programmes: the students aren't spectators. Over the past few weeks they've walked nesting beaches at sunrise, sat through late-night surveys, hauled litter off the sand, monitored nests, and spent a morning at the wildlife first aid station seeing what a rescued turtle actually looks like up close.

This is our 10th season running them. Three school groups down, three still to come — and we're only halfway.

We do it alongside Goulimyi, whose team is on these beaches every day of nesting season, long after our groups fly home.
And it happens because Action sends us young people ready to get their hands sandy rather than just take photos.

Three more groups to go this summer and peak hatching is still ahead of us. 🌊🐢

🌊 WORLD SEA TURTLE DAY🐢

Conservation is often imagined as something carried out by scientists, researchers, and environmental organisations. While that is certainly true, meaningful conservation also depends on partnerships, community involvement, and people who choose to care.
For many years, Natural Greece has been proud to collaborate with Tulipa Goulimyi, a small but dedicated NGO working to protect sea turtles and coastal ecosystems in Lakonia, South Peloponnese.

Each summer, volunteer school groups participating in our educational programmes join the NGO's conservation activities, helping monitor nesting beaches, identify threats to turtle habitats, participate in beach clean-ups, and learn firsthand about the challenges facing wildlife today.
The impact goes beyond the work carried out on the beach. By connecting tourism and conservation, these programmes help provide support for ongoing field activities and contribute to the continuity of local conservation efforts throughout the nesting season.

Most importantly, they allow young people to experience conservation not as an abstract concept, but as something real, tangible, and worth protecting.

On World Sea Turtle Day, we celebrate this collaboration and everyone who has contributed to it over the years—from the passionate team at Tulipa Goulimyi to the hundreds of students, teachers, and travellers who have become part of the story.

Together, we are reminded that tourism can do more than explore nature. It can help protect it.💚

Celebrating NATURA 2000 Day is a reminder that Europe’s wild heart still beats in protected places. These landscapes hold the stories of species that survived against the odds, of wetlands that breathe life into entire regions, and of people who choose to walk gently through nature.
Every time we step into a NATURA 2000 site — whether to watch birds, hike a forest trail, or simply breathe — we become part of a bigger effort to keep these ecosystems thriving.

Here’s to the places that protect us as much as we protect them. 🌿 Happy NATURA 2000 Day.

What does a real day of birdwatching in Greece actually look like?

Only day when you're happy to hear your alarm clock. Starting before sunrise you get to experience new colours, smells and sounds. Moving through wetlands, fields and forests filled with herons, bee-eaters, orchids, tortoises and unexpected wildlife encounters. Returning home with dusty boots, golden light and fresh memories of nature.

Our newest blog post is a small journey through a day spent outdoors — slowing down and noticing the natural world again.
