✨ Hong Kong Methodist Church: The “Red Brick Comma” on Hennessy Road

Amid the bustle of Hennessy Road stands the Hong Kong Methodist Church—a building woven with profound cultural and spiritual memory. First built in 1935 in red brick, this church has witnessed Wan Chai’s transformation from colonial days to the present. For generations of Chinese Christian families, it was more than a place of worship—it was a hub for community, youth activities, and collective growth.

In his preface “Red Brick Comma” to Scents of Thought · Generations, Lau Wai Shing affectionately recalls the red-brick church. He likens it to a comma in the city’s sentence—a small but crucial pause, inviting us to breathe, reflect, and look back amid the city’s relentless pace. This is not nostalgia for its own sake, but a thoughtful meditation on urban memory and human rhythm.

Although the original red-brick church was rebuilt in the 1990s, its warmth and memories linger. Scenes of gatherings, prayers, weddings, and baptisms still echo invisibly, becoming part of Wan Chai’s living history.

“Red Brick Comma” reminds us: Urban development is not just about demolition and rebuilding, but the art of preserving our emotional ties to place. The story of this church is also Hong Kong’s story—a search for balance between modernity and tradition, memory and present.

✨ Spring Garden Lane: Glitter and Emptiness in Eileen Chang’s “The First Incense Burner”

In Eileen Chang’s The First Incense Burner, Spring Garden Lane is painted as a dazzling yet stifling urban scene. The street is crowded with vivid goods—amber-hued durian cakes, blue porcelain vases, emerald green velvet embroidered with gold—while people surge through a sea of lights and scents, creating a feast for the senses.

Yet, Chang’s Spring Garden Lane is not just about noise and splendor. Beneath the surface, a trace of loneliness and desolation lingers. The blue sky and seashore glimpsed in her prose quietly set off the emptiness and rootlessness of city dwellers amidst material abundance.

As a keen observer of postwar Hong Kong, Eileen Chang uses this corner of Spring Garden Lane to mirror the city’s transformation and complex inner life. For today’s wanderers, Spring Garden Lane is more than a market or a street food paradise—it’s a place to feel the weight of history and the soul of literature.

✨ Spring Garden Lane: City Anxiety in Liu Yichang’s “The Drunkard”

In Liu Yichang’s novel The Drunkard, Spring Garden Lane is far more than a point on the map—it becomes a space where urban restlessness and personal alienation collide.

“The noise of Spring Garden Lane. The patent medicine hawker’s voice is hoarse. People. People. People. Crowds everywhere, shoulder to shoulder, like sardines in a can.”

This stream-of-consciousness narrative reveals the intensity of 1960s Hong Kong: crowded, rapidly modernizing, yet emotionally distant. Amid the bustling throng, the protagonist drifts like a ghost, searching for selfhood in a city that never stops moving. Liu’s writing doesn’t just portray the city’s surface, but exposes the anxieties and loneliness within.

Spring Garden Lane’s history stretches back to the 1920s, when it was lined with Japanese shops, bookstores, barbers, and cafés catering to both the middle class and Japanese community. In Liu’s Wan Chai, we find a crossroads of multiculturalism—where language, identity, and urban spirit intertwine.

For today’s explorers, Spring Garden Lane is a gateway into the modernity of Hong Kong literature and a key to understanding the city’s complex history.

✨ Southorn Playground: A Stage for Grassroots Dreams

In Huang Guliu’s novel The Story of Xiaqiu, Southorn Playground transforms into a vibrant stage for grassroots culture. The protagonist, “Xiaqiu”, is a witty, sharp-tongued youth who drifts around Southorn Playground, capturing the spirit and struggles of Hong Kong’s working class in the 1950s.

The novel’s colloquial Cantonese style brings to life the rebelliousness and aspirations of streetwise teenagers. Southorn Playground is not just a soccer pitch—it’s a microcosm of young people seeking their place and fighting for their destinies at the city’s edge. Within these pages are both laughter and sorrow, documenting the resilience and vitality of small people in turbulent times.

Today, surrounded by high-rises, Southorn Playground remains a gathering place where locals play, meet, and share in the familiar energy of the city. For literary explorers, it’s not just a landmark—it’s living proof of a grassroots history woven into Wan Chai’s urban fabric.

✨ Southorn Playground: A Silent Gaze Through Time

Lu Wei’s essay Passing Southorn Playground Again isn’t a travelogue, but a silent gaze across time. As she passes this public space once more—a place that held her youth—memories and feelings intertwine. To her, Southorn Playground is not just a site, but a landscape of lively days now tinged with gentle quietness.

With simple language, Lu Wei sketches the present scene: the playground remains, people still come and go, but among the rising towers, the old bustle seems to have faded, leaving only ripples of memory in her heart. The playground she writes about is both a snapshot of urban change and a marker of her inner world.

For wanderers, this is a place to slow down and contemplate the city’s deeper memories. Inspired by Lu Wei’s words, passing through Southorn Playground, you too may rediscover emotions that time once softened.

✨ Fenwick Street: Wan Chai’s Hidden Veins

If you want to trace the deeper pulse of Wan Chai beyond its bustling towers, Fenwick Street is a key thread. In Shu Xiancheng’s West of Wan Chai, this unassuming street becomes a vessel of warmth, memory, and local life—a far cry from the district’s glossy skyscrapers.

Blending memoir and urban geography, Shu Xiancheng writes tenderly about growing up in West Wan Chai. Fenwick Street is a recurring setting—a landscape of the soul, moving from childhood to adulthood. Every neighborly interaction, every shifting shadow, and every hidden family story in its old buildings is steeped in the flavor of daily life.

Though humble, Fenwick Street condenses another side of Hong Kong’s urban development. It carries the traces of postwar migration, bearing witness to the city’s transformation from fishing port to modern metropolis. For today’s literary explorers, a walk down Fenwick Street is more than a journey through space—it’s a dialogue with the past, a tribute to local history and everyday culture.

✨ Old Wan Chai Police Station: Stories Behind the Stone Walls

Standing at the crossroads of Gloucester Road and Fleming Road, the Old Wan Chai Police Station is a classic colonial landmark in the district. Built in 1932, its four-story U-shaped structure blends neoclassical elegance with streamlined curves—graceful even among the city’s modern towers. Step inside and you’ll find wooden staircases, iron-framed windows, and vintage fireplaces, all preserving the 1930s charm.

Beloved local children’s author Ho Tsz once set his short story Wan Chai Police Station here. Through a child’s eyes, the building transforms: from a strict law enforcement outpost into a space rich with imagination and warmth. In Ho Tsz’s writing, the officers are not just symbols of authority, but guardians of the neighborhood—a bridge between law and human kindness.

Today, the old police station has become the headquarters for the International Dispute Resolution Centre, shifting from enforcing the law to fostering peace. This transformation echoes Hong Kong’s evolving urban landscape, showing how heritage can gain new meaning with time.

Walking past the old station, pause and consider: what new stories and roles does this historic building now carry in the city’s fabric?

✨ Blue House: A Capsule of Wan Chai’s Living Memories

On Stone Nullah Lane stands a splash of pale blue that always catches the eye—the Blue House, a model of Hong Kong’s heritage conservation.
In Walking the Streets of Wan Chai, author Tao Ran writes, “Its color makes a bold statement, unlike anything around it, making it truly eye-catching.” This line captures both the Blue House’s visual impact and its deep cultural weight.

Built in the 1920s, the Blue House cluster consists of four Cantonese-style tong lau, blending Chinese and Western elements. Once home to Hong Kong’s first Chinese hospital, its cantilevered balconies, Chinese-tiled roofs, and French glass doors reflect the city’s rich cultural crossroads. Now a Grade I historic building and winner of the 2017 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Excellence, the Blue House is heritage brought to life.

For Tao Ran, the Blue House is more than a visual landmark—it’s a vessel of neighborhood memory and shared emotion. Step inside and you step into a time capsule, witnessing the evolution of the city and its people.

✨ Blue House: Generations in Blue

In her essay A Journey in Wan Chai, student Chan Yu-Ping from True Light Middle School writes movingly about the Blue House:
“That’s a Greek blue, like the little blue houses in Greece, marking the character of a neighborhood. The pale blue reveals the traces of time. Yet inside, everything seems frozen in the 1950s and 60s.”

For the younger generation, the Blue House is more than a historic monument—it’s a portal to Hong Kong’s past, a catalyst for memory. The “Viva Blue House (We嘩藍屋)” revitalization project has breathed new life into the old community: young people now rediscover history through visits and activities, while longtime residents stay rooted in place.

Through Chan’s eyes, the Blue House becomes a bridge of memory across generations—her writing captures not just a scene, but a story deeply woven with Wan Chai’s soul. This is more than a student’s observation; it speaks to a generation’s care for local culture and connection.

✨ Lockhart Road: City Lights and Hidden Stories

Lockhart Road pulses with urban energy—towering buildings, flashing neon, and the heartbeat of Wan Chai’s nightlife. It’s here that Liu Yichang’s classic novel The Bar Girl draws its inspiration, delving into the struggles of a woman working in a bar, caught between ideals and reality, emotions and economic survival.

Through a stream-of-consciousness style, Liu Yichang captures the inner turbulence of his characters, portraying not just one woman’s journey, but also the gender and class tensions of 1960s Hong Kong. The buzz and glamour of Lockhart Road stand in stark contrast to the protagonist’s loneliness and confusion, making the street both a backdrop and a symbol of the city’s spirit.

Today, you might not see the same bars or “bar girls” along Lockhart Road, but literature lets us hear their whispers and glimpse the city’s reflection in their eyes. This is a stage for urban memory and a living archive of gendered stories.
