Issyk Kul itself is one of those places that feels almost improbable when you first encounter it. A vast alpine lake sitting at around 1,600 meters above sea level, it’s one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world. Despite the region’s harsh winters, it never freezes thanks to its slight salinity and remarkable depth, reaching over 600 meters in places. Stretching roughly 180 kilometres in length, the lake almost looks like a sea, especially when the wind picks up, and small waves roll toward the shore. Locals have long called it the “Pearl of Kyrgyzstan,” and it’s easy to see why as its clear waters shift from deep blue to turquoise depending on the light, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the Tian Shan mountains.

The Andean condor is one of the largest flying birds on Earth, with a wingspan that can reach more than 3 meters (10 feet). In Peru’s Colca Canyon, condors use warm rising air from the canyon to glide for hours with almost no wing flapping. They can live more than 50 years, fly at altitudes above 5,000 meters, and have excellent eyesight for spotting food from far away. Unlike hunting birds, condors are scavengers — they mainly eat dead animals, which helps keep mountain ecosystems clean. Male condors are easy to recognize because they are larger and have a fleshy crest on their heads.

Colca Canyon is a dramatic Andean canyon in southern Peru, known for its steep cliffs, ancient farming terraces, volcanic scenery, and soaring condors. The landscape ranges from high grasslands with llamas and alpacas to warm canyon valleys fed by the Colca River and natural hot springs.

The route from Arequipa to Colca Canyon covers about 160 km, climbing from 2,300 m up to Patapampa at 4,900 m before descending again.

Along the way, you cross Salinas y Aguada Blanca National Reserve, a high-altitude plateau around 4,000 m where vicuñas, alpacas, and sometimes flamingos can be seen.

Descending into the Colca Valley, the landscape shifts to green pre-Inca terraces still in use today, with towns like Chivay and Yanque.
