When travelling through the Cascade mountains of British Columbia, one of the more visible residents is the Columbian Ground Squirrel (𝘜𝘳𝘰𝘤𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘶𝘴 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘶𝘮𝘣𝘪𝘢𝘯𝘶𝘴).

These playful, mid-sized rodents (larger than a squirrel but smaller than a marmot ) lounge about in open grassy areas never far from their burrows - but are often brave enough to approach a visitor, if you crouch quietly nearby.

A few weeks ago, the campgrounds near Lightning Lake were full of them, but by now they are likely already deep in their burrows, hibernating for of the long winter ahead. [Photo: Mark Malby]
