About This Destination

Lake Yojoa (Lago de Yojoa) is the largest natural lake in Honduras with a surface area of 79 km² (30.49 mi²) and an elevation of 700 m (2,297 ft).

A fresh water lake covering an extinct volcano field, Lake Yojoa is the largest lake in Honduras and a popular destination for sport fisherman and Honduran tourists.
History:

Landscape
There is a beautiful waterfall nearby. Pulapansak is worth the little extra effort to see. Hiking behind the falls which involves getting wet but recommended only with a guide
(always one around to help).

Flora and fauna

Climate: sunny from Jan-Oct the rest of the time is raining.

Getting There
The lake is located off the highway between Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. Bus and car are the only options for getting there.
From San Pedro Sula, to destinations on the NE side of the lake (including Peña Blanca) take the El Mochito bus. The bus leaves several times per day from Calle 5 and Avenida 1.

Getting Around: taxi or you an easy rent a car, it can be easier.

Sightseeing:
Cataratas Pulhapanzak A beautiful waterfall, popular with Hondurans and tourists alike. Great for spotting macaws.

Things To Do:

Price for hotels has a very big variety from $8 to $40 all depends where and what do you will like.. remember you pay for what you get.

The biggest Zoo in Central America, birds watching, rowing, enjoy the fried fish Tilapia in the lake, waterfall, Caves, Home town Brewery, and the gold mines of the Mochito.

- Birders will delight in a lake tour, which provides a special vantage point for viewing many of the several hundred bird species. The Lake Yojoa climate is excellent for growing coffee, and as such, there are a few “fincas” or coffee plantations that can be an amaing experince for you to be going on one of them, and you an see the way the home coffe is prepare .

- First, locals do use rowing boats to fish and move around the lake. Second, it is the best way to preserve the country’s largest variety of bird species. Yes, the lake (and the areas surrounding it) is a birder’s paradise. Some count the number of species as more than 400 hundred. You don’t want to disturb this fragile ecosystem by introducing motorized vehicles.

- Sport fishing After years of over-fishing the black bass popultion in the lake has again returned to safe levels. Bring your own equipment or join a tour with one of the hotels.

- Honduyate Marina has sailboats and other water activities.

- Hiking Cerro Azul Meambar Park. Very nicely developed park run by an NGO. You can stay in the park for $40 per night per room. Trails are well marked, so you won't need to hire a guide. You can also go and hike there for the day for 40L. To get there, catch a bus from La Guama to Santa Elena. Tell the driver you want him to take you to Los Pinos

Shopping: Pena Blanca is a great place for it.

The beer is tasty but very mild. The location is fairly isolated and it's hard to find if you're traveling by car. All in all, it could be a spectacular retreat
