La has visto desde lejos, elevándose sobre los árboles como un gigante dormido. Pero ¿sabías que el punto más alto de Utila guarda secretos más antiguos que sus calles?

Pumpkin Hill, a pesar de su nombre, no tiene nada que ver con calabazas. El nombre viene de su forma redonda, parecida a una. Durante siglos, fue utilizada como punto de observación por pueblos indígenas y piratas. En un día claro, se puede ver la costa de Honduras e incluso el contorno de Roatán.

Además, es una formación volcánica: una de las más antiguas de la isla. Subirla no es solo una caminata—es un viaje a través de capas de historia.

Coral reefs are living ecosystems that can take decades—or even centuries—to grow, but can be damaged in minutes by careless activity.

Here’s what you can do: Never stand on or touch coral, even with fins. Use reef-safe sunscreen—most commercial sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that bleach and kill coral. If you’re diving or snorkeling, maintain buoyancy to avoid accidental contact. And when booking tours, choose operators that brief you on reef etiquette and limit visitor numbers per group.

Utila's reef health is a shared responsibility. By understanding how our actions impact the marine environment, we help ensure that future generations will also be able to enjoy these waters.
