Fritule – A Traditional Carnival Treat 🎭
Fritule are a beloved sweet treat traditionally made during Carnival season in Croatia. These small, golden fritters are crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and often flavored with rakija, citrus zest, or rum.
Quick to prepare and irresistibly delicious, they bring the festive spirit to any table. Serve them warm, dusted with powdered sugar, and enjoy the taste of Croatian tradition! 🇭🇷
Quick Yogurt Fritule Recipe
Ingredients:
1 egg
200 ml liquid yogurt
2 tbsp sugar
1 packet vanilla sugar
1 capful of rakija (optional)
A pinch of salt
200 g all-purpose flour
1 packet of baking powder
Optional: lemon zest, apple.
Preparation:
Heat oil in a pot, ensuring there’s enough for the fritule to float without touching the bottom. Once the oil reaches the desired temperature, lower the heat to medium. If the oil is too hot, the fritule won’t puff up properly and may turn dense and doughy inside.
In a bowl, whisk the egg, yogurt, sugars, rakija, and salt together. Then, mix in the flour and baking powder until a thick batter forms.
Cut the tip of a piping bag (or freezer bag) to about the size of your thumb, then fill it with the fritule batter.
Squeeze the batter into the hot oil. When a small piece of dough, about the same length as the bag’s opening, forms, cut it off with a knife and let it fall into the oil.
As they cook, the fritule will usually flip themselves when one side is golden. If not, gently turn them with a fork.
Fry for a few minutes until golden brown.
Enjoy warm, dusted with powdered sugar!
