After 17 hours back home, just enough to do my laundry, I'm now back at the airport. Off to the next stop on what's becoming a wine-tasting tour of the former Soviet states. The photo is some of the very elegant wines in Chisinau last week. Let's see if Yerevan can top them.

A very hungry new friend ❤️. There are signs up warning about feral donkeys, and we saw one being quite aggressive with others, but they're very very friendly with tourists - they know where their next carrot's coming from.

Finally made it to the National Museum of Lebanon after living in Beirut for 2.5 years (and it’s only 10 mins walk from my house!). It’s surprisingly good, especially the ‘mummy room’. Check out the details on the updated blog.

This giant coffee pot monument is testament to just how much the Sudanese love their coffee. They usually drink it with powdered ginger and a bucket load of sugar in every cup, so it’s incredibly sweet. Try asking for it without sugar and the usual response is a confused “okay, but it won’t be very good.”

The Taka Mountains is a breathtaking hike up some of the world’s most beautiful peaks. It’s not for the faint hearted though - average temperatures are 35 degrees during the coolest month of the year and there are no paths. But it’s more than worth the effort for the views. From the top, you can see all the way across the plains to neighbouring Eritrea, one of the world’s most closed countries.

I recently visited the Meroe Pyramids, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most famous tourist attraction in Sudan - which is not saying a lot, we were the only visitors! Burial site of the kings and queens of the Kush*te kingdom of Meroe, these beautiful monuments are surrounded by a sea of copper-coloured sand.

Find out how to visit them, as well as the temples at Naqa and Musawwarat es-Sufra, two of the most difficult places to reach in Sudan without a guided tour. Oh, and meet the cutest camels ever.
