This morning we met in front of the Great Synagogue in Budapest. The tour was booked in English. But within minutes, it turned into an Italian tour. ❤️
The sun was out, the sky was clear, and we set off into the city.
We talked about how Budapest was born, and so many stories came up along the way.
The one that stayed with Alessia the most was the story of Giorgio , the Italian businessman who posed as a Spanish diplomat during the German occupation of Budapest, and saved thousands of Jewish lives by doing it.

We didn't stay serious for long though. We talked about food too, about rétes (Hungarian strudel) and about chimney cake.
We walked past the Opera House, and we even hopped on the Millennium Underground for a short ride, continental Europe's oldest underground railway.

We sat for a while in front of the Parliament, just talking, just looking.

After almost 10,000 steps 🙈 and so many stories along the way, we said goodbye with this photo.

Alessia Renzelli , é stato un piacere conoscerti e il tour con te mi ha fatto ricordare la mia carissima amica, Monica con cui ho fatto un'esperienza molto simile all'epoca. ❤️

Are you in Budapest on June 20th?

One of the best nights of the year is coming: the Night of Museums. Hundreds of venues open at the same time, one wristband gets you in everywhere, and this year's theme is food. Yes, food. Strudels, pasta workshops, cheese tastings, and Bartók.

There are also English-language programmes, including a guided tour of the stunning Pesti Vigadó and an art history talk at the Museum of Fine Arts.

I wrote up everything you need to know: what's on, what's in English, how much it costs, and how to plan your night.

Most visitors leave Budapest having seen the famous things. The Parliament. The Chain Bridge. The thermal baths. Beautiful, all of it.
But here is what I notice, almost every time.
People come back from Budapest and say it was nice. Interesting. Worth seeing.

And then I think about the guests who have walked through this city with me. They don't say "nice." They say things like: "We learned to love this city." Or: "You showed us Budapest through completely different eyes." Or simply: "We didn't want to leave."

That difference is not about the places. It is about the stories behind them.
Budapest is a city with layers. Ottoman, Habsburg, Jewish, Soviet, Hungarian... all of it sitting on top of each other, visible if you know where to look. Every building has a story. Every dish on the menu has a history. Every neighbourhood has a wound that is still healing.

I was born here. I became a professional tour guide and cook here. And for nearly 20 years, I have been walking these streets with visitors from all over the world, showing them the Budapest that does not make it onto the tourist lists.

Not because those lists are wrong, but because Budapest is so much more than a list. ❤️

If you are coming to Budapest and you want to go home having truly tasted the city, not just visited it, I would love to take you.

I became a cook after I became a tour guide. And that changed the way I show Budapest forever.

I was born and raised in Budapest. I became a cook much later in life. And somewhere along the way, I realised that food is one of the most beautiful ways to understand a city.

A bowl of is never just a bowl of goulash. A chimney cake is not only a sweet snack. Behind every dish there are family stories, traditions, techniques, memories, and sometimes even a little bit of history.

When I walk through with travellers, I don't want to show them a checklist of places to eat. I want them to understand why Hungarians cook the way we do, why certain flavours matter to us, and what life in Budapest tastes like beyond the tourist attractions.

One of my favourite memories is a food tour with an American couple who were visiting Budapest for the first time. We talked about Hungarian cuisine, exchanged cooking tips and recipes, and spent hours discussing food like old friends. Afterwards, they left a review calling it the best food tour they had ever done.

That review meant a lot to me, not because of the five stars, but because it confirmed something I have always believed:

People don't remember every monument they see; they remember the stories they hear, the people they meet, and the meals they share.

And that's exactly the Budapest I love showing.

My name is Orsi.
I was born and raised in Budapest. I've been a professional cook and a licensed tour guide for nearly 20 years.

Food is never just food in . Every dish has a history; every bite tells you something about who Hungarians are: their empires, their hardships, their celebrations.

Budapest is so much more than its landmarks. It is a city of flavours, of hidden places, of stories that most visitors never find.
I am here to show you that side of the city.
