Snake Island is home to thousands of sea snakes. Although highly poisonous, they are not aggresive. During the day they are just past the tree line and mostly inactive. We once found a one meter Sea Krait in our engine room contentedly warming himself under our port engine here. In the darkness it looked like an out of place water hose and we almost picked it up by hand. Chapter 25: Mentawai - page 261. 📷 siloinasurfcharter.

There was a carcass on the beach that had been picked clean by dragons. I took a stand up paddle surfboard over to see if I could identify it. I was a few meters off the beach when one of the dragons, a smaller one about 6 feet long, entered the water. I knew dragons could swim but I did not know how well. It swished its tail back and forth and quickly built-up speed. It swam faster than I could swim but not as fast as I could paddle the SUP out of there. When I changed course, it changed course so it seems the dragon was up to no good. Komodo dragons can and do attack in the water, such occurrences are relatively rare compared to their terrestrial hunting activities. Was happy to provide a good laugh for the guests watching back on the boat! Cannibal Rock, Lehok Uwada Dasami, page 142.

Although the Komodo Islands are nice year around, it’s the May to Sept season that gets the most visitors. Folks enjoy the predictable trade winds, cooler temperatures and dry skies. And the wild life both above and below the water is spectacular. You don’t even need dive tanks to enjoy many of the locations as depths are shallow. Pictured here is the Rinca Anchorage, one of our favorites when hanging out with dragons. Chapter 15: Komodo National Park page 139.
