Our first stop was Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, a city with more than 1,000 years of history and a fascinating mix of contradictions: old and new, traditional and modern.

This is West Lake, Hanoi’s largest lake and one of the city’s most relaxed neighbourhoods. A lakeside cycling path passes ancient pagodas, flower markets and waterside cafés, making this a very different side of Hanoi from the chaotic streets you often see in photos.
