THE OTHER KOMODO. As the season changes, all boats move to other areas, mostly Raja Ampat, and then we have the entire park almost to ourselves. Yes, the north is green, cold and choppy, cannot dive Gili Lawa, etc... but the south is at its best! Manta Alley, Nusa Kode, Padar, Gili Motang... calm seas, 20 mtr vis, water not so cold, and the privilege of diving alone! Pics taken last January.

A chinese Travel Agent specialized in diving trips recently asked me to draw a dozen of maps of the most emblematic divesites in Indonesia, from Komodo, Raja Ampat and the Maluku. When given the choice of electronic maps or watercolor, they picked the second

On a recent trip to Malpelo Island, Colombia, I tried the new dome-shaped diffusers for the strobes that everybody raves about. I have to say the results were very impressive: in wide angle situations were uniform lighting is needed they performed excellently, neither dropping power on the edges nor overexposing the central section of the beam. Moreover, the backscatter was visibly reduced, making these innovative gadgets the newest addition to my camera rig from now on.

My 5.000 dive, while cruising on the deepest sea in the world... 5.000 mts of water under my keel, and nature celebrates with me, offering some of the most spectacular dives of my 22-year career in diving... From lovely macro subjects in Kalabahi Bay (Alor), to schools of hammerheads with 100 individuals in the off-shore atolls of the Forgotten Islands...

After many years diving the same spots every season, I decided to dive a little distance away from the well-known muck sites. The result: a whole array of creatures like a nursery for 4 different species of frog fish (none of them larger than a coffee bean), bluering octopus, ambon scorpion fish, rhinopias or the recently discovered pigmy sea dragon!

As I am about to log my 5.000 dive, what better place to celebrate than the spot where I did my very first dive ever, during my two-star CMAS course in 1992. Thanks to the hospitality of my friend Q**m Valls, I had the privilage to revisit this lovely corner of the Costa Brava: San Feliu de Guixols.

After the succesful presentation on the Montesori school in Bali, the Jakarta branch asked me to repeat it there. Tell the kids about how I made a profession of my passion, while inspiring them on the love for the ocean, and passing on a subliminal message on conservation... A fun journey!

I have been fascinated with s***m whales since I was a kid. My parents lived in the Azores Islands and I grew up surrounded of stories and paraphernalia from the old times when these magnificent leviathans were hunted for their oil. I visited there and wrote a story on how in 50 years the local community has gone from hunting them to a thriving business of whale watching, but didnt have the permits to go in the water with the whales. Finally, a couple of months ago, while guiding a private yacht around Bali, I had the opportunity...

Last month we had the perfect trip in Raja Ampat. Great conditions, no wind, no currents, good vis, and the priceless company of our old friend and great professional Carlos Villoch and his lovely UW model and companion Maite. A great opportunity to try new photographic techniques such as supermacro, snoot, endoscopic lense or fluorescence with UV lights. Looking forward to more next year about the same dates!
