The Ministry of Forestry (Kemenhut) has officially introduced a classification system for the difficulty levels of mountain climbing in national parks, divided into five levels—ranging from Level 1 (easiest) to Level 5 (most difficult). This policy, effective from August 11, 2025, is based on a risk analysis across four key dimensions: morphology, geography, meteorology, and biology.

Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni explained that the classification is expected to serve as an initial reference to enhance climbing safety.

“God willing, with this hiking trail grading system, we will have an initial guide for safety. In the future, a more detailed mountain climbing SOP module will also be developed—regulating what is permitted, the climbing quota according to carrying capacity, so that climbing can be conducted comfortably, safely, and securely,” he said during a press conference at the Ministry of Forestry office in Jakarta, Wednesday (August 13, 2025).
