Impressed by My English Skills

My guests are a mixed couple. The wife is Indonesian and the husband is Vietnamese, but they live in Australia. I speak both English and Bahasa Indonesia because they brought family and relatives from Medan and from Australia.

The couple asked me if I had ever lived in an English-speaking country like England. I said no, but I have visited Malaysia. I explained that my English comes from consistent practice and real-life experience.

Once, I prepared myself to study abroad and passed the TOEFL with a score of 450, which strengthened my foundation. I planned to continue my master’s degree abroad.

I have applied to some universities such as to Australia, Japan, America. But later I changed my decision. Until now, I still keep my application
in the drawer.

More importantly, I use English daily when guiding international visitors—sharing stories, explaining Batak culture, and engaging in meaningful conversations—so my fluency is built not just from learning, but from doing.

One Day Tour with a guest from New York USA.
I don't feel like I was on work (taking full responsibility as guide). She is very nice mature woman. She is kind, respect for local believe, always smile and of course she is considerete person.

We spent long hours drive, faces drizzle and rain. But we enjoyed it.

Many People Got the Blessing

I brought my friends from different regions on a tour in Samosir.

Some came from Riau, some from Mentawai, and some from North Jakarta.

We visited many places: Batu Hoda Beach, Burung Hill, Holbung Hill, Pangururan Waterfront, and more.

We enjoyed ice cream at Kedan Pangururan, had lunch at Solu Bolon Restaurant, dinner at Raja Cobek, and coffee time at Synergy Coffee, Taman Eden, and many more.

Some stayed at Jabu SiRulo Homestay, others stayed at my great grandma’s house.

Some even bought Uis/Ulos directly from the weavers in Lumban Suhi-Suhi Toruan Village, Samosir.

That’s the 'beauty' of tourism—many people can earn money when I bring my friends to travel here.

Our Guests from India

Just a day before they arrive in Indonesia, North Sumatra, the husband contact me and said that they need driver to do tour around Lake Toba.

For some reasons, he said that he wil meet us in Parapat to start the tour. He fullfil his promised. When they arrive in Parapat, they contact us to start Lake Toba Tour.

We start the tour from 1 pm and finish late around 8 pm. We love to see them enjoy the tour tour. And we hope they can leave us review about our service.

The Banker Who Asked the Most Questions

For the second time, I had a guest named Vladimir. This time, he was originally from Russia but had been living in Cyprus for many years. The moment he got into the car, he was the first one to ask me what time the tour would start tomorrow. I told him, “The earlier, the better, if you prefer.”

Not long after, he asked whether there were a lot of mosquitoes here in Medan and Bukit Lawang. I replied, “In your hotel, for sure there won’t be any mosquitoes. But in less hygienic places or areas with stagnant water, there will be. And of course, in the jungle, you’ll definitely find mosquitoes.”

Soon after, he and his wife noticed the traffic jam in Medan. That was the start of a long series of questions. How many people live in Medan? How many live in North Sumatra? Why is this like that? Why is that like this?

Every time he saw someone selling something by the roadside, he would ask me what that person was doing. Later on, after a deep conversation about the economy of North Sumatra and Indonesia, I asked him if I could know his profession.

“I am a former banker,” he said.
I paused for a moment, then replied with a smile, “I need to be more careful and detailed when answering your questions.”

He laughed instantly.

A Day with an Italian Family

Today, I had the chance to guide a lovely family from Italy.

At first, I wasn’t sure if the woman messaging me was truly serious about booking me as her tour guide. She asked about a tour package in Samosir, so I offered a motorbike option. But she said her son was very tall and she didn’t have a license to ride a motorbike.

Soon, she asked about renting a car with a driver. I told her the price—and to my surprise, she agreed right away without bargaining. I could hardly believe it. But I reminded myself not to judge someone just based on a chat message.

Turns out, she was exactly who she said she was. She and her two kids were really staying at Reggae Guesthouse in TukTuk.

When we finally met, we clicked right away. She asked me to order some food for breakfast, then I just order a cup of coffee.

After breakfast, we jumped into the car I had arranged with a driver and began our Samosir Island adventure.

Here is our Samosir Island Tour Highlights:

Start the journey with beautiful views of Lake Toba from Bukit Burung (Bird’s Hill)

Hike the scenic slopes of Bukit Holbung

Refresh at the breathtaking Efrata Waterfall

Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant

Visit Hutaraja, a traditional Batak weaving village, and see how ulos are made

Sip local coffee during a relaxing village break

Continue to Tomok Village to explore the Batak Museum and souvenir market stalls.

We ended the tour back at their hotel. Before saying goodbye, I asked,
“Which place left the strongest impression on you today?”

Her reply warmed my heart:
“Everything was wonderful. But the most memorable part was talking with you. Your stories were amazing!”

It’s days like these that remind me why I love being a guide—not just for the places, but for the people and the moments we share.
