ad| Setting off on a family holiday should be exciting, not exhausting.

On our recent amazing road trip around southern USA (all written about on globalmousetrravels.com 😊)we got ourselves off to the best possible start with these few easy steps, all thanks to

🌟 a fantastic hotel at Heathrow airport the night before we flew. This meant we woke up at the airport refreshed and ready to go. No last minute panic about traffic jams on the motorway or what time to leave home.

🌟 Meet and greet parking at the terminal - we drove up with our bags and left our car with the Holiday Extras parking team. When we arrived back in the uk we called as we were picking up our luggage and the car was waiting for us to load up and head off home.

🌟 A lounge at Heathrow meant we could really relax before the flight with complimentary drinks and food.

🌟 Everything was booked in advance so we kept our stress levels at a minimum. It meant our travel day was super relaxed.

We’ve used Holiday Extras for years, they are so well priced for parking and it’s easy to add a hotel in too. Really recommended before any trip!

Tasting barbecue, creole and spice. Learning the history of the civil rights movement as we travelled through Louisiana and Alabama. It was an epic trip, maybe our best yet for how much we packed in and saw and did. We loved it! It’s give us an appetite for more road trips, seeing other states that we haven’t yet experienced.if you’re planing a trip to the US I hope it helps - there are plenty more features to come!

We’re back 🌟 it’s been the most amazing experience - a road trip around some of the southern US states.

We travelled nearly 2000 miles and visited 8 states.

We travelled from Atlanta to the Smoky Mountains and on to the Tennessee cities of Nashville and Memphis. Then down through the sweet Mississippi towns of Tupelo and Natchez. We saw Louisiana’s cities of Baton Rouge and New Orleans, before hitting the beach at Gulf Shores.

With hard history in Montgomery and Birmingham, Alabama we finally returned back to Atlanta.

We ate hot spicy (mock) chicken in Nashville, BBQ in Memphis and Creole classics in Louisiana. We listened to country music in the smoky mountains, blues in Nashville, Elvis and rock n roll in Memphis and jazz in New Orleans.

We explored the civil rights movement - from plantations in Louisiana to homes built on slavery in Mississippi. We saw the places of protest in Birmingham and amazing education in the most emotional way in Montgomery. And we saw the site of Martin Luther King’s assassination in Memphis.

We walked the soft, sugar white sand of Gulf Shores where we watched dolphins play, saw alligators in the swamps of Louisiana and elk in the national park of North Carolina.

It was a feast for all the senses and we learnt so much. It was incredible on so many levels. We loved it! ❤️

BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA (ad) 🇺🇸

We loved exploring Birmingham. What a sweet city, packed full of cafes and coffee shops and the friendliest people.

We started the day at Kelly Ingram Park. A lovely, peaceful space with a dark history, now full of incredible statues that tell some of its stories, all around the civil rights movement.

On one of the corners of the park stands the 16th street Baptist church which was bombed in a racist attack in the early 60s, injuring many and killing four small girls. This led to protests across the city including a children’s march along the park which was violently put down by police.

Today the Civil Rights Institute in Birmingham tells this and many other stories in the most incredible way. It’s a fantastic and sobering museum - very engaging and illuminating.

We stopped for lunch at the Adam and Eve Cafe - packed full of amazing veggie and vegan sandwiches and smoothies. Really great food.

We wished we had longer to linger in Birmingham. It had a really nice vibe about it.

Our journey continued on though and back to Atlanta where it all began 🌟

GULF SHORES TO BIRMINGHAM, ALABAMA (ad) 🇺🇸

We left gulf shores, driving to Orange Beach and having the biggest breakfast at CoastAL - a huge cinnamon bun and some rounds of an amazing stuffed blueberry French toast. We looked out across the sea as a pod of dolphins jumped and played. It felt ao magical.

Then we headed on, into Florida and through countless small towns with so many stories to tell. Before winding back into Alabama and finally breaking our journey in Montgomery.

Montgomery is where Rosa Parks defied the laws of the time which said as a black woman she had to give up her seat to a white passenger on the local bus. This meant she was arrested and it sparked a bus boycott and eventually change. Although a long time coming. Today in Montgomery the Legacy Sites tells the story of black history in the US from slavery to today.

It is is one of the most incredible museums I’ve ever been to. Raw, difficult, painful and so well done. The impact is strong (half way around there are bathrooms with an attendant ready with a pack of tissues). It’s a museum I wish everyone could visit. There are other sites here but unfortunately we didn’t have time on this visit. We would love to return to do more here though.

And then it was on to Birmingham, Alabama where we climbed the world’s largest cast iron statue - the Vulcan - for views across this very sweet town.

We ate dinner at Little Donkey - a lovely Mexican restaurant. We can’t wait to explore some more.

GULF SHORES, ALABAMA (ad) 🇺🇸

We’ve had such a wonderful, relaxing, rejuvenating time at Gulf Shores.

We started with a cycle ride through the State park. They have a great system here where you can rent bikes and it’s been voted as one of the best places to cycle in the country. And I can see why. It’s all on tracks through the park and there’s so much to see. We loved taking a guided tour with Corey from the park and finding out about all the indigenous (and invading!) plants.

We saw a huge Barn Owl, an alligator and lots of lizards and birds. The children all said how much they’d enjoyed it afterwards.

After picking up some supplies of tasty doughnuts and milkshakes from City Donut .donut in nearby Orange Beach, we headed on to the harbour for a trip out in the bay with Wild Hearts who do a whole variety of sailing trips. We loved this, sat on the netting at the front in the sunshine. And we saw dolphins! They were fast and happily diving in and out of the water and it was wonderful to see.

In the afternoon we went to The Hangout which is THE place to be in Gulf Shores. They have great food and a really happy vibe. There’s a fun foam party every hour on the hour and as the sun sets there is live music to keep the party going!

We headed to the beach for more time on the absolutely beautiful sand. It is like flour, so soft and white and one of the best beaches we’ve been to. It was lovey to spend some time here just taking it all in.

With a final meal at the 50s style diner Sunliner which had become one of the children’s favourites, we walked back to our apartment in the balmy air.

This apartment is huge, we all have our own bathrooms and there’s so much space and views across the back to the sea. We wish we could just move in!! Gulf Shores has captured our hearts! 💙
