We took a tour of the beautiful house at Killruddery House and Gardens It was really interesting and informative (Thanks Barbara). Our favourite story of the tour was about Lady Harriot. Her Husband was William Brabazon 11th Earl of Meath. They married in 1837. After seeing some on her European tours, Harriot wanted an Orangery. Her husband, was not in favour of the Idea at all. So Harriot, being solid in her convictions sold her diamond tiara in order to pay for the Orangery. If you look at the ornate upper surrounds of the Orangery at the house, they are actually designed to resemble her tiara.

Our next walking tour is on Sat 24th at 11am

One of the most surreal things to happen in many a year in the town had to be the time in 1997 when Garth Brooks climbed a ladder on to his Mini Bus and serenaded the town with a live version of "Friends in Low Places". He was at the offices of Eastcoast Radio that was situated on Quinsbourough Road at the time, just opposite the Carlisle Grounds and obliged all of his local adoring fans. Thankfully it was captured by RTE and can be viewed in their fantastic archives. https://www.rte.ie/archives/2014/0128/500763-garth-brooks-live-and-unplugged-in-bray-co-wickow-1997/

When we were doing our tour on July10th We noticed that Half Moon SWPC were having a very well attended swimming competition in the sea close to the Harbour. It was fantastic to see this club keeping the sport of Waterpolo alive in Ireland. Its a sport that was actually hugely popular in Bray and other coastal towns in the past. Bray had 2 Waterpolo pools. One at the Baths beside where the Bray Sailing Club now is and the other at the Cove. They would compete with other towns that had water polo teams like Blackrock, Sandycove Dunlaoighre etc. Having visited the and watched the sport being played along the Croatian coast I can confirm that it is a hugely entertaining spectator sport. In the late 19th Century Bray was officially considered a resort town (a town that had more tourist beds than resident beds in the summer). Between the 1860s and 1900 two of the most impressive hotels were the Royal Marine Hotel (where Box Burger, Catalyst Coffee and Platform Pizza Bar is now situated) and the International Hotel where Bray Bowl Entertainment is now situated.

The Forecast for our tour tomorrow at 11am is bright and sunny so why not come along and hear about the interesting characters that called Bray home at a time when most people were here for their holidays?

The Beautiful Mosaics at the train station in Bray really are worth 5 minutes of your time. The pictures were originally painted but they were starting to flake. Using tiles means they will stand the test of time much longer. They depict, Dargan, Brunel, and a picture depicting all the decades since the stations opening in 1854. After a gorse fire in 2018 on Bray head Garda Air support noticed that an old EIRE sign had been revealed. There were many of these signs dotted around the coast of Ireland and they were all numbered. The Number on the Bray sign is 8. The signs were made in order to let Aircraft know during WW2 that they were in Neutral Ireland. Some local volunteers repainted the sign in order to help preserve it.

Our next tour is on Saturday 10th at 11am.

SO Why is there a spare tunnel on the outside of the Bray to Greystones railway line? The outside tunnel was the original Tunnel and there was a timber bridge 45 meters wide and 10 meters high. These were opened in 1855. In 1867 there was a crash from the bridge and a train fell into the sea. 2 People were killed and 23 injured. However the bridge didn't collapse. The fall was due to a faulty track and lack of a proper guard rail. It was decided to bore a tunnel deeper into Brayhead so they could avoid the need for the bridge. This was opened in 1876. The spare tunnel was used for raves in the 1990's
