Do you have bank holiday plans?

If you’re staying around Cavan over the long weekend, there’s plenty to fill a day without travelling too far. You could be out on the water in the morning, walking through caves in the afternoon, or cycling along an old railway line with a coffee stop somewhere along the way.

A few ideas worth looking at across Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands:

🚲 Feel Good Bicycles – e-bike or bicycle hire on The Boyne Valley to Lakelands Greenway
🌊 Erne Island Waterpark – inflatable waterpark on the lake with slides, climbing frames and trampolines
πŸ›Ά Cavan Adventure Centre – kayaking, water activities and outdoor adventures
πŸ› Cavan County Museum – WW1 trench experience, exhibitions, cafΓ© and playground
🏊 Cavan Swimming Pool & Leisure Complex – swimming pool and slides
β›° Marble Arch Caves – underground cave tours

Some of these are easy to pair together for a full day out, especially if the weather holds up.

πŸ’¬ Are you more likely to spend a bank holiday outdoors, or catching up with family somewhere local?

This is... Garvagh Lough Loop (Orange)

Some walking routes feel busy before you even park the car. This one doesn’t.

The Garvagh Lough Loop (Orange) follows quiet minor roads around the lake through the limestone landscape of West Cavan. Along the route you’ll pass abandoned farmsteads and ancient megalithic tombs, with Cuilcagh Mountain sitting off in the distance for much of the walk. There’s very little traffic out here, so you notice more of the smaller things - the sound of water along the roadside, changes in the landscape, sheep moving through fields nearby.

The full loop takes around an hour and a half at a comfortable pace. Afterwards, you’re close to places like Cavan Burren Park, the Shannon Pot, and the Marble Arch Caves Visitor Centre, so it’s easy to make a full afternoon of it in Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands.

πŸ“ Garvagh Lough Loop (Orange Route)
πŸ₯Ύ 5.5km
⏱ Approx. 1 hour 30 mins
πŸ“Œ Moderate walk

πŸ’¬ What’s the first thing that makes you decide a walking route is worth coming back to?
