She was born in Claremorris on the 16th February 1902 to John Murphy and Anna Agnes Fanning. Her father was a native of Hollymount who made his fortune in the Klondike Gold Rush. He met her mother Anna, a native of Tipperary, in America.
They had returned to live in Ireland in 1901. They lived on the Mount Jennings Estate in Hollymount.
Deliaโs father encouraged her interest in singing. As a young girl she would often sit around the camp fires of travellers who camped on the estate. Tom Maughan who was about the same age as Delia introduced her to ballad singing. She was continually getting new songs from her family, school and people in her village.
Delia attended the Presentation Convent in Tuam and later the Dominican College Dublin. It was here that she struck up a friendship with singer Margaret Burke Sheridan. Delia graduated from University College Galway with a degree in Commerce.
In University she met her husband Dr. Thomas J Kiernan. They married in 1924 on her 22nd birthday. They had four children: Blon, Nuala, Colm, and Orla. Her husband Thomas joined the Irish diplomatic service and his first posting was to London. Delia began to sing at diplomatic gatherings and exileโs parties in London. Through this she befriended the great singer John McCormack.
Throughout her life Delia balanced writing, recording and performing her songs with a hectic life as the wife as one of Irelandโs most celebrated ambassadors. They lived in many Irish Embassies between the 1930โs and 1960โs - London, Rome, Canberra, Bonn, Ottawa and Washington.
In 1939 Delia recorded three songs for HMV; The Blackbird, The Spinning Wheel and Three Lovely Lassies with which her name became synonymous. In fact she sang The Spinning Wheel at the inauguration of her husband as Ambassador to Australia.
She returned to live in Ireland for a while in the early 1950โs. It was during this time she became a singer and performer in her own right. She began to tour Ireland and England and her songs could be heard regularly on BBC radio. Later when they moved to Ottawa in Canada she recorded her only LP, The Queen of Connemara.
During her career she recorded all over the world. She also appeared in the film โThe Island Manโ, filmed on the Blaskets. Delia was well liked all over the world but she always proudly called Mayo her home.
Her husband, Thomas died in 1967 and by 1969 her own health was in decline. She sold her home in Canada and returned home to Ireland and settled in a small cottage in the Strawberry Beds in the Dublin suburb of Chapelizod.
Delia died of a massive heart attack on the 11th February 1971. In her lifetime she had recorded over eighty songs.
