The day has finally come! The 1926 census is available on the National Archives of Ireland website. I have spent a very exciting morning looking for my relatives and finding all sorts of interesting things I never knew - such as that my grandfather Francis Doble (only ever a farmer to me) trained as an engineer. It explains why both he and my father knew so much about machinery.
Afterwards, I spent time looking at everything with my 22 year old son and found it very emotional to look at these records with him and tell him all about the people who were part of my life but long gone now. I didn't quite expect it would affect me so much but it did. I image there will some tears shed around the country today.

A new term of the “Professional Certificate in Family History Research” run by

City College Dublin and Accredited Genealogists Ireland, commences on

25th September 2025.



This year, there are exciting new additions to the popular foundation Certificate

Course when we explore the expanding world of genetic genealogy and tackle

the impact of Artificial Intelligence, good, bad and indifferent.



The Certificate course can be the first step for those considering a future career

in genealogy, or an exciting way to enhance a hobby. It stands alone, but is also

the preferred route to more in depth study in the Diploma which follows in the

Spring term.



The lectures this term examine the principal sources for Irish genealogy,

the so-called “pillars”, of civil, church and census records alongside the main

land surveys of the nineteenth century.

It also tackles the subject of research itself, from co-ordinating notes to

assessing the value of each piece of information to the final production of a

professional standard report.

Sources such as newspapers and military records are also explored, and

there is a guided visit to the National Library of Ireland to give students hands-on

experience of a great repository, followed by an informal discussion time

with members of AGI.
