Follow a winding single-track road deep into the Beara Peninsula (with an optional detour to the ancient Uragh Stone Circle) and prepare to be amazed. ☘️ At the foot of Croagh Patrick stands the poignant National Famine Memorial. It commemorates the millions lost during the Great Famine (1845-52). It powerfully depicts a "coffin ship," its rigging formed by skeletal figures – a stark reminder of the dreadfully overcrowded and unhygienic vessels that carried desperate Irish emigrants fleeing famine from our shores. ☘️
