Field trips are a key part of our study abroad programs. They help students stay engaged, think more deeply, and connect what they are learning to the place they are standing in .

They are just as valuable for professors. Conversations flow more easily, students ask better questions 💬, and teaching feels more natural and rewarding ✨.

Our friends Éilís Kennedy and Peter Blanchette have collaborated on this wonderful project, This World is not Conclusion — a beautiful song cycle inspired by the poetry of Emily Dickinson. We are delighted to share their work, which began right here in Di**le.

Inspired by their shared admiration for Emily Dickinson’s poetry, American archguitarist and composer Peter Blanchette and Irish traditional singer and songwriter Éilís Kennedy have been crafting a cycle of twelve songs—composed by Blanchette and sung by Kennedy—as both a celebration and a musical exploration of Dickinson’s eccentric and brilliant verse.

The song cycle, titled This World is not Conclusion, takes its name from the first line of one of Dickinson’s poems (her poems are typically untitled, and their opening lines have long served as titles). These words, Blanchette says, suggested the musical path forward:

“Her poems don’t follow a verse-chorus form, and they’re often brief compared to most lyrics—but that’s where the fascination lies for me as a composer. It’s about character, the sound of the words, and giving something of the poet’s inner life to the listener. Whenever I read her work, there’s always a between-the-lines experience. I wanted to bring that provocative ‘absence of conclusion’ into music.”

Kennedy’s luminous singing brings to life what Blanchette calls a “personal, biographical fantasy” of Dickinson, illuminating the philosophical and even cosmic dimensions of her poetry without diminishing its human heart. Blanchette’s settings, performed on archguitar—an instrument whose resonance recalls the lute of the 15th through 18th centuries—create an intimate and timeless sound world.

Blanchette and Kennedy have been performing Traditional Irish songs together since first meeting in Di**le two years ago. This latest work will be released in late Spring 2026.
