Fit-Up theatre was a regular feature of social life in Ireland in the 1930′s with up to 50 companies on the road at the height of their popularity. At a time when people were preoccupied with rationing and the ‘Emergency’ the arrival of the Fit-Ups brought welcome distraction as a well as entertainment to many a small town. In 1934, a travelling theatre company arrived in Stepaside Village at the end of a long season on the road. One of the group, Mike O’Grady, remained behind and formed the Sandyford Little Theatre. Other founder members were Mick Doyle, Bridie Doherty, Anna Doherty and Charlie Rourke. The Sandyford Library, Lambs Cross, became the regular venue for their productions.

A shout out to our friends in Rathfarnham Theatre Group and their upcoming production,

"Our Few and Evil Days" by Mark O'Rowe.

About the play:

"It's a very different type of play, with characters talking over one another, interrupting each other, and having some very explosive conversations!!!"

Performed in The Abbey in 2014, and seen on the circuit in 2020, prior to Lockdown, Rathfarnham Theatre Group are delighted to bring it now to The Mill Theatre Dundrum from 22nd to 25th April. Carmel Cullen is directing and they've got a great cast.

Happy World Theatre Day from Sandyford Little Theatre Company 🎭🎉

27/03/2026

On this special day, we come together to celebrate the timeless magic of theatre and the profound impact it has on all of us. ✨

Theatre is a powerful art form that transcends boundaries, sparks imagination, and brings communities closer through shared stories and experiences. It is a celebration of creativity, expression and connection, and today we honour not only the art itself but also the community that makes theatre accessible to everyone.

At dlr Mill Theatre, we celebrate each and every member of our team whose passion, dedication, tenacity and talent breathe life into every production, transforming ideas into unforgettable moments on stage. Together, we celebrate the joy, inclusivity, and community spirit that make Theatre a true beacon of hope and inspiration for all.
