🎬 Film & the Aran Islands

The Aran Islands have long drawn filmmakers looking for something raw and real.

From Man of Aran in 1934 — one of the most influential films ever made about island life — to The Banshees of Inisherin, the islands have appeared on screen not as a backdrop, but as a presence.

The cliffs, stone walls, Atlantic light, and silence don’t need staging.

They’ve been telling stories for centuries.

The light is famously unique
Artists and photographers have been drawn to the Aran Islands for generations because of:
• Open Atlantic skies
• Reflected light off limestone
• Rapid weather changes

The islands can look completely different within the same hour.

The Aran Sweater 🧶

The Aran sweater is more than a piece of clothing — it’s a record of island life.

Traditionally hand-knitted from unscoured wool, these sweaters were worn by fishermen working the Atlantic. The natural oils in the wool helped repel water and retain warmth, even in harsh conditions.

Each sweater was made at home, often by mothers, wives, or sisters, using patterns passed down through families. The stitches weren’t decorative alone — they told a story.

Cable stitches were said to represent fishermen’s ropes and hopes for a safe return. Diamond patterns reflected the small fields of the islands and a wish for prosperity. Zigzags echoed the cliffs and paths of island life.

There is a long-held tradition that family stitch patterns could help identify fishermen lost at sea. While part of this belongs to folklore rather than formal record, it speaks to something deeper — how closely identity, family, and survival were woven together on the islands.

Every stitch carried meaning.
Every sweater carried a story.

Like so much on the Aran Islands, what was made to survive became something that endured.

Dún Aonghasa is older than the pyramids of Egypt

Standing at the edge of the world it rises above the Atlantic on sheer cliffs, its stone walls older than written history on the islands.

Every stone was carried and set by hand, forming a fort that has faced wind, weather, and time for centuries.

The islands don’t explain themselves loudly.

Their history is written in stone.

Stone walls first shaped the land here.

Then they became homes.

The same limestone cleared from fields was used to build houses that could stand up to Atlantic weather and island winters.

Built slowly. Built carefully. Built to endure.

The islands tell their history in stone.

One of our quieter neighbours.

Donkeys have been part of island life for generations, patient, steady, and never in a hurry.

Very much the Aran way.

Island details ✨

Stone walls like these weren’t built for beauty — they were built for survival.

Every stone was carried, placed, and reused over generations. They still protect homes today.

Mornings here start gently.

The Atlantic stretches out below, the light changes slowly, and the island wakes without hurry.

You hear the sea before anything else.

This is what it feels like to stay on the Aran Islands.
