Jamie Anderson, won 3rd place in the National Write a Poem awards 👏👏.

A sad reflection on our fishing industry and its rapid decline.

(I’ll try this again, it’s such a good poem, it deserves to have every word in the photo of it 😂) Our son, Jamie Anderson, won 3rd place in the National Write a Poem awards.

It’s about the fishing industry and its decline, ultimately. I’ll post it here as well. It’s so good, in my humble opinion as his proud mother. It’s captures exactly what’s happening in the fishing industry.

Talent today was exceptional. As the amazing Author Patricia Forde said in her really entertaining speech and about our future being in safe hands with our youth of today.

As we said in January, this year it’s our intention to update our community on what is being discussed and actioned upon by the Community Council. At our meeting on Wednesday 18th February, we discussed a wide range of important community matters including the following:

We are delighted to confirm that a fantastic €23,000 was raised for the Christmas Lights. A huge thank you to everyone who donated, including the Women’s Group (€1,000) and the Golf Society (€260).

Work remains on the Christmas Lights and Councillors Jimmy Brogan and Michael Boyle have also pledged additional support. Councillor Niamh Kennedy has previously supported our fundraising efforts.

A defibrillator will now be installed at Fintra Beach, along with a new swim shelter funded through Donegal Sports Partnership. Both are very positive additions for the area and we’d like to thank Donegal Sports Partnership for the new swim shelter.

Other key topics discussed included:

• Lough Head Bridge going to private tender and when the work may be completed.

• Ongoing concerns regarding the pedestrian crossing on the Shore Road.

• A progress update on the Coal Yard Car Park.

• The Community Council is to contact Bus Éireann about a bus shelter for and physical timetables for the Shore Road

• The Diamond snag list was discussed and will be again reported to Donegal County Council

• Flooding concerns on Bridge Street were discussed and an update on works sought.

• Updates from the Councillors present on the Killybegs Area Draft Plan, including concerns around the Ring Road proposal.

Serious concern was also raised regarding closed beds at the Community Hospital. We have been informed that recruitment is ongoing, and it was suggested that a community panel be pursued to support continued engagement. The Community Council will follow up on the community panel proposal.

We also discussed the possible reintroduction of the Hook Festival and are engaging with local tourism and event groups to explore the possibility of the festial’s return.

The meeting concluded with sincere sympathy expressed to the family of Conor McBrearty, remembering his enormous contribution to community life.

As always, Killybegs Community Council is here to support the community. Please do get in touch if there is an issue or concern that you believe the council should be made aware of. You can contact us on here or at [email protected].

Go raibh mile maith agaibh 😊

Killybegs Community Council shares in the deep sorrow felt throughout the town at the sudden passing of Conor McBrearty.

Over many years, Conor was quietly generous with his time and good humour, enriching festivals and fundraisers with his clever and much-loved treasure hunts and pub quizzes.

His contribution to the joy of these occasions was immense, and his loss will be deeply felt.

Conor was the epitome of community spirit.

Our deepest sympathies to his family.

Thank you, Conor.

Rest in peace.

Now that Christmas and the New Year are well over us, we just wanted to extend a massive thank you to all of those who helped us decorate the town for the festive season.

The Christmas display wouldn’t be possible without the tireless work of Barry O’Hara, Kevin Hegarty, Michael (Sparks) Gallagher, Darren Rawdon, Kieran Keeney, Pat Byrne, Shaun Curran, Con O’Hara and Martin Carr who spent countless hours hanging the decorations around the town.

The 2025 display wouldn’t have come together without the support of Mooney Boats Ltd, Hegarty Centra, Killybegs Seafoods, Gallagher Bros, KT Nets and GCM Painting. Thank you.

We’re also completely over the moon and so incredibly grateful to be able to announce that our Christmas Lights Fundraising Campaign has raised nearly €21,000 to ensure that we can hardwire the town and ensure that our Christmas Lights are better than ever going forward. To everyone who donated through GoFundMe, who bought a ticket for our cake raffle, all who attended a fundraising event, the local politicians and County Councillors who have pledged support and the businesses who massively supported the campaign, we owe you a huge massive thank you.

The breakdown of the fundraising is as follows: our cake raffle, with cake very generously donated by Ann O’Boyle, raised €843.71, our GoFundMe and other donations raised €6002.76, Donegal County Council granted us €3500, local businesses donated a very generous total of €9014.40 and funds raised from BMS Gym and Killybegs GAA’s fundraising events totalled €1424.10.

We’ve a few more outstanding donations to come in but we just wanted to wish everyone who supported our town a most massive thank you and to say how very grateful we are. It is so very clear the generosity and kindness of our community.

Go raibh mile maith agaibh.
