World Bike Day has me thinking about how much more adventurous I’ve become when I travel, all thanks to two wheels.

I still remember the first time I cycled through the valleys of Norway into Flåm with towering mountains on either side, waterfalls tumbling down the cliffs and that crisp fjord air. There was a few tough climbs and more than a couple of “what was I thinking?” moments, but rolling into the village with my legs like jelly and a huge grin on my face was unforgettable.

Then there are the coastal paths of Cyprus with the sun on my back, the glitter of the waves to one side and little stops for coffee or a dip in the sea. Those cycles felt like pure freedom, where time slows down and it’s just you, the road and the views.

Cycling on holiday has given me a huge sense of achievement as well as a different way to connect with each destination. You notice the sounds, the smells, the tiny details you would miss from a car or coach. And that “I did it!” feeling at the end of the day is absolutely priceless.
