🌿✨ A magical morning at Monks Pantry with the QVTT Foraging Team, Lena & Tom ✨🌿

As part of National Biodiversity Week, we gathered to celebrate the Hawthorn Blossom and learn about the health benefits, traditions and folklore surrounding one of Ireland’s most treasured native trees.

🌳 During our Celebrating the Hawthorn Blossom event, we visited the Hawthorn tree at Quin Abbey, taking part in a candle-lighting ceremony and the old custom of tying cloth to its branches with wishes for health, wellbeing and good fortune.

☕ The morning ended with Hawthorn blossom tea, homemade chocolate blossom cake and great company.

📚 We were also delighted to launch the new QVTT Biodiversity Bookmarks, now available in the Monks Pantry and our local Post Office.

☀️ Our next QVTT Foraging event is the Summer Solstice gathering on Saturday 21st June. More details to follow.

📮 Postcards from Quin — The Village Pump

A lovely fresh look for the old village pump beside St Mary’s Church in the heart of Quin, recently repainted in its traditional green colour by Mike Reddan 💚

Years ago, pumps like this were an important part of everyday village life — providing water for nearby homes and serving as a natural meeting place where neighbours stopped for a chat and shared the news of the day. Preserving features like this helps keep a connection to Quin’s past and the generations who lived here before us.

The beautiful flower bed surrounding the pump at St Mary’s Church is cared for by Kay & John O’Shaughnessy and is filled with pollinator-friendly perennial planting including daisies, wallflowers, hardy geraniums and sweet alyssum, bringing wonderful colour to the village while supporting bees and butterflies 🌼🐝

Another small corner of Quin that’s worth stopping to appreciate and admire. 🌱💜🌱

🌼🐝 Day 10 of National Biodiversity Week brings us to the Flower–Insect Timed (FIT) Count station at St Mary’s Church, Quin. This simple 10-minute citizen science activity helps monitor pollinators while encouraging people to slow down and connect with nature. 🌿

Using the QVTT innovative bilingual sign, you place the 50 × 50 cm grid available at the station over your patch of flowers, set a timer for 10 minutes and count insects landing on the flowers. Results can be submitted through the FIT Count app or via the QR code on the sign at the station. 📱

Why not check out the FIT Count signs and give it a go? Ideal for all ages and a lovely way to connect with nature.

There are also 2 more FIT Count stations at the Arbutus Nature & Sensory Garden Trail. 🌸 Every FIT Count helps build a better picture of pollinator health in Quin and nationally.

Yesterday, our QVTT Pollinator Advisor Elaine Wall was busy carrying out bumblebee monitoring and completed a FIT Count at St Mary’s Church as part of the Return to Nature Clare Church Biodiversity Project. ☀️🐝

The hanging baskets and meadow areas full of native Irish flowers in the Community Centre and St Mary’s were buzzing with pollinators, providing such valuable habitat for wildlife. 🦋🌼

National Biodiversity Week may be over, but the biodiversity work in Quin continues — and the place is buzzing! 🌱

🌿 Day 9 – National Biodiversity Week 🌿
Arbutus Nature & Sensory Garden Trail – Quin

As part of our daily National Biodiversity Week posts highlighting local QVTT biodiversity actions, today we feature another beautiful pocket of nature in our lush green village 🌳💚

What was once an underused green amenity area has become a vibrant outdoor classroom and biodiversity space for the pupils of Scoil na Mainistreach.

Designed by David Lawrence, Creative Gardener, with support from residents of Arbutus Grove, the project continues the work started by David’s father Eddie Lawrence, who planted many of the mature trees over 30 years ago. 🌳

In Spring 2026, an ecological survey and nature education plan commissioned by Quin Village Tidy Towns was completed by Áine Ní Fhlatharta through funding from Community Foundation Ireland. The plan was developed in collaboration with David, Arbutus Grove residents, QVTT, Scoil na Mainistreach, Principal Fergal Lynch, the Green Schools Committee and coordinator Lorna O’Donovan.

The site now includes native wildflowers, sensory planting, wildlife habitats and a newly planted double-row native flowering hedgerow planted by QVTT volunteers in March to support pollinators, birds and biodiversity. 🐝

Planned Actions

Planned actions include outdoor learning areas, nature trails, citizen science projects, pollinator-friendly habitats, willow structures and wildlife ponds. 🌿

Nature Features

Wooden mushroom sculptures, a wheelbarrow pond, pollinator awareness signs, two Flower Insect Timed Count stations, bird boxes, woven willow structures and tree stump seating — all designed by David — help create a unique space where nature, creativity and outdoor learning come together. 🍄

The Arbutus Nature & Sensory Garden Trail was also one of the sites visited by Christopher O’Sullivan, Minister of State with responsibility for Nature, Heritage and Biodiversity, during the launch of the Quin Biodiversity Action Plan.

If you are in Quin, visit the Arbutus Nature & Sensory Garden Trail and see how a green space has become a special place for biodiversity, learning, wellbeing and community connection. 💚
