Simon Berrow of the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group surveying the West Connemara SAC for Bottlenose Dolphins. His dedication and persistence have rubbed off on all his team making the long days a pleasure. The Dolphins help as well, when we find them!

I took this pics two days ago North of Inishboffin. Two incredible birds. The great Shearwater nests in the southern ocean, it them circles the entire Atlantic passing our coast about now on its way back to nest.
The Corys nests in Canaries Cape Verde and suddenly in 2023 arrived of our coast in big numbers in late summer.
The pics show both with their wing tips skimming the water. How can they do that without crashing. ?

We actually got 2 Blue Sharks yesterday and saw a couple more. Giles was delighted with his fish even it was slightly smaller than Pete’s . What are the chances of that feisty little shark growing to the size of its companion?

Almost beat me.! Havnt been shark fishing in a long time and we caught this magnificent fish today. 183 cm f length female blue shark 10 miles west of high island. A truly wild place. Back in the day these were easy for me but today I struggled to get her in and out of the boat safely. We were both too old and too heavy, she was fine. Hope she lasts longer than me her world is far more dangerous and my odds far better. Congratulations to Pete McCambridge she gave you a good fight.

Do all these strandings have the ping of military active sonar?

Deep-Diving True’s Beaked Whale Dies After Live Stranding at Killcummin Back Strand (Lacken/Castlelacken), Co. Mayo with her calf on the evening of the 27th July 2025. This is a shy deep-diving species whose home habitat is the deep waters and canyons beyond the shelf edge off our west coast. Its sad death follows a cluster of beaked whale strandings across northwest Europe in July.

⚠ Please be advised there are graphic photos of a dead whale in this post.

Nice days fishing yesterday with Pascal Maher and the gang out West of Clare Island where we came on some good Ling. Tough enough conditions out in the open but the fishing made up for it.

This is worth a watch if you are concerned about commercial sprat fishery. Sprat is a "catch all " name for tiny fish but sprat sounds better. The reason its still allowed is our politicians, law makers, dont think theres votes in it. If they wanted they could passs a law that said stop it and guess what? It would stop.
