International Women’s Day, a day where we recognise, celebrate and honour the contributions of women worldwide, especially those women who have helped drive and shape Comhaltas to become the highly respected organisation that it is today. It is particularly fitting to remember our previous female Uachtarán’s; Caitlín Bean Uí Mhuimhneacháin, the very first Uachtarán of Comhaltas in 1951 and Anne Finnegan in 2015.

This year at Comhaltas we are proud to recognise our Uachtarán, Attracta Ní Bhradaigh, who has made a huge contribution to the preservation and promotion of Irish music, singing and dancing worldwide. Attracta has been a member of Comhaltas since she was three years old. A flute, fiddle and whistle player, she has several All-Ireland titles at both underage and senior level. As a member of the famous Longridge céili band she was the youngest ever band member to win an All-Ireland medal. Attracta is a fluent Irish speaker and has represented Comhaltas in several countries including South Korea, Lesotho and Brazil.

An Irish and Geography teacher by profession she is a natural leader. Attracta has held many positions within Comhaltas and been an officer at Branch, County and Provincial level, so it was fitting that she was elected Uachtarán of Comhaltas in May 2024. Her election is a testament to her lifelong dedication to Irish culture and her vision for its future. Attracta’s experience is vast and includes representing Comhaltas at various Dáil committee hearings; creator and co-author of original Trad is Fab; Music teacher, Scoil Éigse and TTCT tutor, SCT examiner and adjudicator and member of several Comhaltas tours.

On this International Women’s Day, we also want to acknowledge and thank the work done by all the incredible women within Comhaltas who work tirelessly to promote our Irish music, song and dance. We thank them for their dedication, passion and commitment that continues to promote the aims of our organisation, ensuring our culture thrives for generations to come.

Pádraig Ó' Ceallaigh (Patrick Kelly)

It is with great sadness that we have learned of the death of our esteemed friend and colleague Pádraig Ó' Ceallaigh. Pádraig made a significant impact on the fortunes of Irish Culture across the world, he served as Uachtaráin an Chomhaltais, Chair of Provincial Council along with many other roles. More recently Pádraig was a Trustee of Comhaltas.

Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.

We send our sincere sympathies to all his family.

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam uasal.

Dr John Cullinane was recently honoured by CCÉ through the presentation of a Gradam na hÉigse award for ‘a Lifetime of Promoting and Preserving Traditional Irish Step Dancing’.

John has been involved in Irish Dancing all his life and has held all the highest offices within An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha (CLRG) at various stages. Although Irish Dancing has evolved over the years John has been instrumental in the inclusion of mandatory traditional solo set dances as part of the dance teacher qualification syllabus, and the introduction of traditional set competitions in feiseanna.

John worked hard to preserve and promote the “old” Irish dances by several means. To ensure the lifetime’s work that has gone into gathering all this valuable material on Irish dancing is preserved for the future, John with great generosity, has very recently made his entire collection of material accessible to everyone. With backing from CLRG, the Cullinane Archive Collection has been established within the Irish Traditional Music Archive (ITMA) in Merrion Square, Dublin 2, where all the material can be viewed and enjoyed.
