2025 marks the 250th anniversary of the birth of Daniel O'Connell. So for today's edition of our free Monument Monday Newsletter, I thought we might head down to his beloved Derrynane to visit Ahamore Abbey (also known as Derrynane Abbey). A place intimately connected with the story of the Liberator.

Our weekly newsletter features some of our favourite places to visit around Ireland.

In this episode of Amplify Archaeology Podcast, Neil chats with Dr Michelle Comber of Archaeology, University of Galway about the exciting recent excavations at Rathgurreen Ringfort, a truly monumental enclosure on the Maree Peninsula on Galway's Atlantic Coast.

Michelle tells us all about the excavation and how it helped to uncover the complex story of the site, with continuity and change across centuries. And the evidence that revealed the connections between the Maree Peninsula with the Roman world and beyond.

You can find Amplify Archaeology Podcast at the link below, or on all the usual podcast channels, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts and more. Please do subscribe and leave us a review if you can, it really helps the podcast to be found.

It was a busy but brilliant Heritage Week this year! It was great to see so many ways to celebrate Ireland's incredible heritage, and we particularly enjoyed being part of events in Leitrim, Waterford, Mayo and Westmeath.

It is such a privilege to meet so many people passionate about their local stories, monuments and landscapes and to collaborate with great partners.

We're already looking forward to next year!

In today's mail, we take a trip to the outskirts of lovely Lismore in County Waterford to cross a bridge to nowhere. One of Irish history's most remarkable testaments to folly and notions of grandeur!

A wonderful evening with a full house at the Heritage Week event at the The Glens Arts Centre in Manorhamilton, where Dr Kieran O'Conor and Dr Seán Ó Hoireabhard joined Neil Jackman and Róisín Burke for a lively discussion on the lives and legacies of the O'Rourke Kings of Bréifne.

The evening began with the poetry of Seamus O'Rourke, and there was great discussion at the end.

The event has been recorded and will be made available in the coming weeks on Leitrim Heritage YouTube channel.

Thank you to the Glens Centre, and all involved, as well as Leitrim County Council Heritage Officer Sarah Malone and the support of The Heritage Council

One of our favourite parts of Heritage Week is Aonach na nDéise – the Viking Heritage Day, adjacent to the important Viking site at Woodstown on the Waterford Greenway.

This event features the brilliant historical reenactment group Déise Medieval who put on living history displays and battles, and you can explore a viking trading village, play Viking games and take part in activities, and any budding archaeologists can join TVAS to take part in the excavation of a Viking warrior!

We will be there on Sunday afternoon to answer questions and chat about the Viking archaeology at Woodstown, along with demonstrations and talks from the National Museum of Ireland, the Discovery Programme, Transport Infrastructure Ireland and Waterford City and County Council.

This free Heritage Week event begins on Saturday, August 16th, from 1pm–5pm with the main day on Sunday, August 17th, from 10am–5pm on the Waterford Greenway.

And don't miss the free talk tomorrow evening with Paul Kavanagh on Viking shipbuilding, in the Garden Room of the Medieval Museum Waterford Treasures at 7.30pm.

It is wonderful to see this important work taking place at Court Abbey! A fascinating medieval Franciscan Friary with rare wall paintings, Achonry Mullinabreena Enhancement, adopted the site as part of The Heritage Council Adopt A Monument Scheme in 2024.

We look forward to seeing the Discovery Programme results and continuing to work with the group, through the Adopt a Monument Scheme and Sligo Heritage Office to conserve and promote this special site.

As one of the leading dynasties of medieval Ireland, the O'Rourke family played a pivotal role in shaping the Ireland we know today. Join us for a FREE Heritage Week event on Saturday, August 16th, at 7.30pm, at The Glens Centre, Manorhamilton for an evening of discussion, debate and storytelling as we delve into the tales of this influential family.

Seamus O’Rourke, an award-winning actor, director, storyteller, and, most importantly, an O’Rourke himself, will start the evening with tales and reflections from his Leitrim upbringing.

This will be followed by a lively discussion about the historical O’Rourkes and their impact on Leitrim and Ireland, with leading experts Dr Kieran O’Connor and Dr Seán ÓHoirebhárd, where I will be asking questions about the lives and legacies of this influential family.

Tickets are limited, so save your place here: https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/1477615540859?aff=oddtdtcreator
