Cllr Mary Linehan-Foley - Independent, East Cork Cllr Mary Linehan Foley
INDEPENDENT CLLR in EAST CORK

Mary Linehan-Foley Independent councillor for East Cork. We can make a difference by working together.

YOUR voice being heard in County Hall Born, raised and still living in Youghal, Co. Cork, politics is in her blood. Her father, Paddy Linehan was a public representative for 43 years and Mary followed in her father's footsteps, elected to Youghal Town Council for the first time in 1999. Since then, Mary has been proactive in voicing her constituent's concerns at local level and has been an integra

l part of countless community organisations.; Chairperson of Youghal Twinning association ; a member of the East Cork Garda Youth Diversion Project and former Chairperson of Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group. She also holds the accolade of being elected as Mayor of Youghal on three occasions - the first woman ever to hold the post. Mary held the position as Mayor of Cork County from June 2020 to June 2021 making her only the third woman to hold this position in Cork County . She is also a member of the Housing SPC , the Coastal Management SPC and Tourism SPC which are Committees within the council and also serves as a member of the HSE Forum since her election to the Cork County Council & East Cork Municipal District. Within Cork County Council Mary also serves on both the Southern Committee and Development committee …

Married with five children and 5 grandchildren, Mary & her husband John live on Youghal's Kilcoran Road. Having grown up and received her education in the area, her love for East Cork knows no bounds. She has worked tirelessly over the past 23 years for her constituents across the region and believes that being an Independent candidate affords her a much louder and stronger voice, due to her lack of political allegiances. In short, her voice is the people's voice.

'Over the past number of years, as an Independent Councillor, I have been progressive on all of the issues that have been brought to me by my constituents. I believe that the freedom of being an Independent has been of major benefit to my constituents as I have the ability to work tirelessly with all members of the council or, if elected, the government - regardless of their affiliations,' she notes. Starting her working life in the family business - Moby Dick's Bar in Youghal - Mary & John raised their five children () with an ethos that continues to today: work hard, respect others and always take a stand for those whose voices aren't heard. But while her role as a public representative leaves little time for herself, Mary can - on occasion - be found walking on the beaches of Youghal (where she's often stopped by constituents raising concerns) or spending time with her family.

'I think when you put yourself forward for a role in politics, you have to be able to stand by what you stand for at all times,' Mary states. 'As someone who believes firmly in the role of community in society, I will stand for what you stand for - and I'll stand by you too.

Inaugural Cruise Calls to Youghal and Ballycotton…
Youghal and Ballycotton are the latest Cork County Council ports to benefit from the County’s growing cruise tourism reputation, with the expedition ship Le Bellot making its inaugural calls to Youghal on Wednesday, the 20th and Ballycotton on Thursday, the 21st of August. Passengers were introduced to the hospitality and the heritage of East Cork and Ireland’s Ancient East.

A vibrant welcome awaited passengers in Youghal with the Town Crier, the Cobh Heritage Vintage Era group and local musicians from Brú na Sí creating a wonderful atmosphere on the pier. Hundreds of local people welcomed the cruise visitors as they disembarked. During the afternoon, many of the cruise passengers enjoyed a heritage tour of the town, visiting St. Mary’s Collegiate Church to enjoy the immersive Voices of St. Mary’s experience. Youghal Clock Tower and Youghal’s new Lace Museum also welcomed visitors who learned about the town’s maritime and cultural past on walking tours led by French and English-speaking guides. Local cafés and shops ensured the call to Youghal was memorable for all.

A number of the cruise ship visitors took an adventurous approach to the area, e-biking along the Youghal to Midleton Greenway, while others opted for a more relaxed afternoon with a visit to the famous Midleton Distillery.

The trend for keeping cruise visitors local continued in Ballycotton the next morning. The small harbour is ideally suited to small expedition ships like Le Bellot, and a trip out to the Ballycotton Lighthouse gave the mainly French tourists a unique opportunity to experience the East Cork coastline and its stories. Ballycotton’s Cliff Walk also proved popular with the visitors who chatted with locals along the route and shared stories about the ship as it paused on its 9 day/8 night trip called “Natural and Cultural Discoveries in Celtic Lands.” From Ballycotton, Le Bellot continued onto Kinsale and then Baltimore.

The cruise itinerary is as follows:

Dublin – Youghal – Ballycotton – Kinsale – Baltimore – Skomer Island – Fishguard – Warrenpoint – Dublin.

During the Youghal part of this cruise itinerary, the Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Mary Linehan Foley, joined officials from Cork County Council on board Le Bellot for a formal gift exchange with the ship’s Captain to mark its inaugural visit to Youghal. Mayor Linehan Foley said, “We are immensely proud to welcome a cruise ship to Youghal and showcase what makes County Cork so special to a growing number of international visitors. The fact that this ship will also visit Ballycotton provides a double boost for the local economy and tourism industry in the East Cork region. As Mayor of the County of Cork, I would like to commend all those involved in making this happen.”

Cllr. Rory Cocking led the delegation on-board in Ballycotton and presented the Captain with a framed print of Ballycotton to mark the inaugural visit.

Cork County Council staff were present at each port to welcome and assist passengers and crew, handing out maps and brochures to encourage the cruise visitors to return to discover all the region has to offer. The inaugural calls at Youghal and Ballycotton are among 25 cruise visits this year, with repeat visits to Schull, Kinsale, and Bere Island emphasising Cork’s growing Cruise appeal …
Special thanks to local Cork County Council officials for their organisation and facilitation ..
