Ganpati Mandal Walk - Pune Edition! ✨
After 3 years of calling Pune my home, I finally got the chance to experience one of the city’s most iconic traditions – the Ganpati Mandal Walk! This year, I decided to dive deep into the festive spirit and visit all of Pune's revered 9 Ganpatis.
Pune is where it all began. In 1892 revolutionary Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari aka Bhau Lakshman Jawle started the first Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav of India. The idol portrays Ganesha killing a demon with his tusk (P8), making it a distinctive and unique representation. Crafted from wood and bran, the idol has remained unchanged since its installation. Bhausaheb, who was deeply engaged in the revolutionary movement before India's independence, reflected his vision of freedom into this depiction of Ganesha, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
Later the celebration of Ganeshotsav as a public festival was popularized here Lokmanya Tilak in 1893. His idea was to unite people under the banner of Ganpati Bappa during the freedom struggle.
