A wind-shaped dune landscape deep in the Sahara.
We were heading back from the desert camp where we spent the night under the stars when a sandstorm started building. The camel riders wanted to keep moving and asked us not to get down in the dunes since it’s easy to lose direction out there.
I waited for a moment, weighing the opportunity to capture the scene unfolding in front of me — the moving sand and the beautiful S-curves in the dunes — against the very real possibility of losing direction in a sandstorm.
In the end, I stepped off anyway, thinking I might not get another chance to photograph that atmosphere, and walked straight into the blowing sand to capture this frame.
All the while keeping an eye on the group so I didn’t lose them. Using a camera in a sandstorm isn’t easy either; with fine sand blowing everywhere, even seeing clearly through the viewfinder takes effort. But the shifting S-curves in the dunes made it worth it.
The same moment in two interpretations — color to show the warmth of the desert - and black & white to highlight the shapes and lines of the dunes.
Which version speaks to you more — color or black & white?
