I was floored by the first sight of the , five monolithic stone shrines. The structures are incomplete. The rathas are named after the heroes and their wife and resemble temple chariots.

The Shore Temple was submerged for many years. It came into view when the British excavated the area. I was quite amazed to know that six temples are still submerged in the Bay of Bengal.

But they are not intact anymore. This occurred after a massive tsunami in the 17th century.

Mahabalipuram is the remains of a once thriving city, submerged below the sea when the shoreline changed. India’s Atlantis, maybe?
