7 WONDERS of THE WORLD

* Miniature versions of the 7 Wonders of the World made with recycled scraps from landfill sites.

*The park is home to replicas of some of the most visited monuments in the world. But what makes these structures unique is that these have been constructed from waste materials like scrap metal, discarded auto parts, procured from the landfills of the city. The park seems like a tiny island isolated in its being and message from the congested surroundings of the Sarai Kale Khan Inter-State Bus Terminus and the Outer Ring Road, where people and vehicles of all kinds jostle for space.

*South Delhi Municipal Corporation has built the park which is spread over a land of five acres at Rajiv Gandhi Smriti Van. The nearest metro station to reach here is Hazrat Nizamuddin on the Pink Line of Delhi Metro. It is also near Sarai Kale Khan bus terminal in South-East Delhi.

JantarMantar
Jantar Mantar located in New Delhi is built by Maharaja Jai Singh II of Jaipur in the year 1724. The maharaja built five observatories during his ruling time in the 18th century. Among these five the one in Delhi is the first to be built. The other four observatories are located in Ujjain, Mathura, Varanasi, and Jaipur.

The objective behind the construction of these observatories was to assemble astronomical data and to accurately predict the movement of the planets, moon, sun, etc. in the solar system. It was one of its kind at the time it was built. By the year 1867, when India came under the control of foreign invaders the observatory underwent considerable decay. later after many years the Government of India came forward and took several initiatives to restore and maintain the historical observatory and promote it for tourism in Delhi.

Alauddin Khilji tomb.
Delhi has so many beautiful tombs of lesser mortals than the most powerful ruler of his time namely Alauddin Khilji.

In the entire history of Islamic rule in India Alauddin Khilji was one of the most powerful ruler and he extended his dominion all over the country. His administration was harsh in punishments and he created even Chor Minar to hang the heads of those who were killed as punishment.

He was so ambitious that he wanted to create a tower of the double the size of the Qutub Minar and he even started the work on his project. Today his incomplete Minar in the complex lies in ruins, only one storey of which had been created in his life time. Obviously nobody followed on his work. His creations Alai Darwaza of course is beautiful structure of his time and one of the mosque he built at Nizamuddin also shows his capabilities.

His tomb at the Qutub complex is one of the simplest tomb anywhere in Delhi and does not do justice to his name and fame and stature.

When you look at his simple grave you get reminded that life is a great leveller and it is not necessary that your work and power succeed your death. Today he lies totally neglected and it is seen that thousands of visitors who flock to the Qutub complex most of them do not find it worthwhile to even have a look at his tomb.

To me this tomb and the adjacent Alai Madarsa which he created to spread Islamic learning is very important and I spent quite a bit of time there during my last visit. The mighty hero of his time virtually lies in utter neglect in the magnificent heritage of Qutub complex.
