Upstream dream team! Between classes we were free to explore the gorge … gorgeous, of course! The water was cold on our feet, sun was warming, and vibes were vibing. We found a beautiful spot for lunch - thank you nature!

I had the sincere pleasure of taking a Leave No Trace Level 2 (Master) Trainer course in this beautiful corner of Utah. The scenery was amazing as were my fellow students and instructors. Here’s just our first day - nature is indeed a wonderful classroom.

The Burr Trail Switchbacks! I took the day driving the Bullfrog-Notom Road to Burr Trail Road aka The Loop the Fold route. The full loop is 124 miles/199km combining paved, gravel, clay, and sandy roads in and around Capitol Reef National Park, Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument and even some private ranch road. The scenery is epic to say the least. Driving the switchbacks was a lot of fun - one of the many highlights of the day for sure! Note: Plan & Prepare - Make sure to stop into the park office to check road conditions before starting this journey. Even in very good conditions a high clearance SUV is recommended. Rain can cause dangerous driving conditions and flash flooding.

A beautiful morning drive through Capitol Reef National Park. Topped off with an Apple pie breakfast. Yum.

Las Vegas, NV to the tiny town of Bicknell, UT. I took an early morning flight from NYC to Las Vegas, picked up my monster rental pick-up truck and started driving … although it was about 6 hours on the road, it’s hard not to revel in the scenery. Wow. And that tasty burrito for dinner was the cherry on top of a great day!

After our adventures in the Smoky Mountains, we started the long drive hauling all our gear back to Texas. Along the way we scouted a climbing area - I hadn’t been on rock for a few years, so that was very cool! We stayed in Chattanooga- a first for me. Nice little city - we especially enjoyed the pinball museum. 🙂 Then we hauled on - Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama (BBQ!), Mississippi, Louisiana, and finally back at the base camp in Texas! What an amazing few weeks?

Second session in the Smoky Mountains. My group of 7th graders was fantastic. Inquisitive, kind, caring, intelligent. It was a joy exploring the abundance of nature with them on our backpack. So many cool creatures … including bears!
