# # # ЁЯМК WHAT IS NARMADA PARIKRAMA?
Just as **Girivalam at Tiruvannamalai** is deeply revered and popular in Tamil Nadu, **Narmada Parikrama** is one of the most revered river pilgrimages of North India.
Narmada is considered one of the most sacred rivers of India. **Adi Shankaracharya composed the revered Narmadashtakam** in praise of Maa Narmada, and the spiritual significance of Narmada has also been highlighted in the teachings of **Kanchi Mahaswamigal**.
The tradition of **circumambulating an entire sacred river** makes Narmada Parikrama a unique and spiritually significant pilgrimage.
According to traditional belief, **Markandeya Maharishi** was the first to undertake the Narmada Parikrama.
The pilgrimage takes devotees through the beautiful landscapes, ancient temples, ashrams and sacred places along the banks of Maa Narmada across **Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat**.
