TDW celebrates Lohri: Dulla Bhatti, a Muslim landlord fought for the honour of 2 Brahmin girls, saving them from the Mughal emperor Akbar. He became their godfather and is believed to have married them off on Lohri with much pomp and festivity, directly challenging the authority of the emperor.

Dulla Bhatti emerged as the ultimate symbol of the composite Punjabi culture – and his songs of bravery were sung by Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims alike on Lohri, an indigenous festival that celebrates the end of the peak winter season.

At night a bonfire is lit and winter savouries (til, gajak, jaggery, peanuts, and popcorn) are served around the bonfire with the traditional dinner of makki-ki-roti (multi-millet hand-rolled bread) and sarson-ka-saag (cooked mustard herbs).

From TDW's DEN: Karva chauth
Hope all the women fasting today are doing fine, just a few more hours left for the moon to appear. Soon you'll be looking at it through a sieve. But why through a sieve & not directly? Though there are many stories around this but this one seems the most apt - looking at the moon through a sieve/ a channi signifies that all evil elements are 'strained' out of the lives of the couple so that their lives are blessed with good things like a shining moon
