TDW celebrates Lohri: Dulla Bhatti, a Muslim landlord fought for the honour of 2 Brahmin girls, saving them from the Mughal emperor Akbar. He became their godfather and is believed to have married them off on Lohri with much pomp and festivity, directly challenging the authority of the emperor.
Dulla Bhatti emerged as the ultimate symbol of the composite Punjabi culture – and his songs of bravery were sung by Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims alike on Lohri, an indigenous festival that celebrates the end of the peak winter season.
At night a bonfire is lit and winter savouries (til, gajak, jaggery, peanuts, and popcorn) are served around the bonfire with the traditional dinner of makki-ki-roti (multi-millet hand-rolled bread) and sarson-ka-saag (cooked mustard herbs).
