Panchvati....Nasik

Panchvati Overview

Holy land for the believers of Ramayana, Panchvati attracts a lot of pilgrims. A serene town located near Nasik, the site offers small sightings having a lot of significance in the epic of Ramayana.

Given the legend of Panchvati, the place holds a lot of religious significance even in the present day. Sites such as the Kalaram Temple and the Sita Gufaa are on every pilgrims list. The Kumbh Mela takes place on the river banks of Godavari, and has a surplus of pilgrims from every corner of world during the occasion.

The city of Nasik has great significance in Hindu religion, and Panchvati has its own share of legends associated with it. It is believed that when Lord Ram along with Sita and Lakshman went into exile for 14 years, they made Panchavati their home. The word literally means 'Garden of Five Banyan Trees'. The trees can still be seen in the temple premises near Sita Gufaa and are believed to have existed even during the times of Ramayana.

About 30 km from Nashik, the beautiful religious town of Trimbakeshwar is home to one of the jyotirlings of Lord Shiva. The town’s name is Trimbak but it has become synonymous Trimbakeshwar, the name of the temple dedicated to Shiva.
The peaceful atmosphere combined with a pleasant climate makes Trimbakeshwar an ideal spot for nature lovers and those looking for spiritual relief.

Trimbakeshwar houses the temple which is regarded one of the most famous and unique of the 12 Jyotirlingas dedicated to Lord Shiva. Trimbakeshwar temple, river Godavari and the hills of Brahmagiri together make Trimbakeshwar one of the holiest places in India.

The exceptional feature of temple of Trimbakeshwar is that the jyotirlinga of Shiva has three faces which signify Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The temple is built entirely with black stones and has a spire topped with a golden trident. The porch of the temple is decorated with beautifully carved and decorated pillars and arches. The temple walls are intricately sculpted with floral designs and figures of various Gods and Goddesses.
As per legend, Trimbakeshwar was the ‘place of Tri-Sandhya Gayatri’ where Lord Ganesha was born. People perform several religious pujas at Trimbakeshwar to attain a happy and peaceful life.
The Simhasta Kumbh Mela is held once in 12 years in Trimbakeshwar. The Kumbh Mela is marked by millions of devotees who plunge themselves into the river Godavari under the belief that it will wash away their sins. The annual festival of Shivratri is also celebrated in Trimbakeshwar with fervour.
