Hi, I’m Chitku we’ve met before. This is my brother Kaachbo. We have been brought into this world by Priyanka Tolia. She is an Exhibition Designer from the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad, and had studied History (Honours) from Lady Shri Ram College (LSR) before that. Priyanka often heard from the elders in her community of how when they led the transhumance trading lives before the 1962 war with China, as kids they were asked to ‘go play chitku’ , which essentially meant a place where children were sent out to play. Walking along the streets of Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, it is the same mundane things to see with occasional “out of the ordinary” sights, but in recent days, along with the regular crowd of exquisitely well dressed people, there has been increasing sightings of boys and girls dressed in skater-wear armed with skateboards and a resolute resolve. A concoction of different cultures was witnessed at the Plaza Terrace on 21st June 2019.
"I hope we have more of these events in the future, this was an advent of bringing together different urban cultures, and to have a sense of doing something back for the society that usually stigmatizes the cultures because we sometimes like working a little out of certain systems."

A peace rally which was intended to set up the event was conducted by on occasion of International Skateboarding Day.

On occasion of International Skateboarding Day, an independent body of youths organised an event in which a celebration urban street cultures and sub cultures was held at the Plaza Terrace at Lall Bazar Gangtok. Different communities practicing different urban art came together as one cohesive spectacle.

Sitting on the extended plinth of the red and yellow building alongside the Chorten, I watched tourists strike flamboyant poses in front of prayer wheels in rhythmic motion while a traditionally dressed, old lady waited patiently for them to finish so she could go about her rounds.
