Assam Unscripted: A Journey Beyond the Obvious
By Julie Kagti / Curtain Call Adventures

Article written by our founder on immersive travel experiences in Assam for the month of May Indigo Inflight magazine.
Those travelling Indigo this month please do read and we will love it if you share a photo and tag us.!!

There is an unmatched thrill in the early morning walk alongside Karbi tribesmen. As the first light dapples through the towering canopy, the forest awakens with the haunting, melodic calls of hoolock gibbon searching for their mates, for a few minutes I was completely memorized as we waited holding our breath to spot them jumping high above us in the canopy of trees.

Butterflies float lazily across the path as my guides share their sophisticated, generations-old ecological wisdom.
Hosted by mindful operators like Curtain Call Adventures, these visits reveal the soul of Assamese tea culture.
Traveling through Assam in the month of May, transforms a standard vacation into a profound journey of discovery. It proves that the most luxurious travel experiences are not found in opulence, but in authenticity, connection, and the gentle art of slowing down to listen to the stories of the land. Beyond the Map: Northeast India

Armchair journeys into the remote landscapes, cultures, and stories of Northeast India

Walking on Old Forest Trails:
CHAPTER 1
Sangti Valley , Arunachal Pradesh

Living near the forest shapes their lives, they forage, collect firewood. The Monpa community use forest trails to connect to other villages and farmlands, collect wood and herbs.
No journey to the Eastern Himalayas is complete without exploring on foot the amazing flora and fauna. You can challenge yourself to do hard treks or like most of our clients opt for easy walks through rustic hamlets and nearby forests, walk slow, pause to admire butterflies among the ferns, listen to bird calls , breathe deep in the fresh air and enjoy the dappled sunlight through the trees.

Through this series of beautifully filmed videos, we at Curtain Call Adventures hope to offer those curious to know more, a richer understanding of Northeast India.

Aka Hrusso: Tradition, Creativity and Continuing
CHAPTER 4
Arunachal Pradesh, India

As we drive deeper into the eastern Himalayas towards Thrizino in Kameng district, the lifestyle of the Aka Hrusso tribe takes centre stage. Living in harmony with their land, they are beginning to realise the urgent need to preserve and document their jewellery, clothing, and traditional customs for the next generation.
A great deal of effort has recently been made to provide them with a written script, as their oral language sits on the endangered list — the youth today are far more fluent in Hindi than in their own .
Through this series of beautifully filmed videos, created in collaboration with , we at Curtain Call Adventures hope to offer future travellers to the region, as well as those curious to know more, a richer understanding of Northeast India.
We hope the series inspires journeys that are informed, thoughtful, and deeply rewarding.

Riteilang Khongrangjem, from Shillong, was the winner in the Reel category of the Footprints for Sustainability competition in 2025.

Riteilang captured the essence of sustainability through his lens. As a photographer, storyteller, and tour guide, he brings a unique perspective that allows viewers to see beyond the surface of a destination. He is also a fellow from the 6th batch of Green Hub.

What made Riteilang's winning reel truly special was his focus on the Mei-Ramew Café - an indigenous establishment dedicated to preserving traditional culture and sustainable practices. Through his visual storytelling, he demonstrated how such spaces offer tourists an authentic way to connect with indigenous cultures, values, and ways of life.

Riteilang's work reminds us that responsible tourism isn't just about visiting places, but about understanding them. His reel beautifully illustrates how indigenous enterprises can transform travel experiences into opportunities for cultural appreciation and environmental mindfulness.
