The Rise and Fall of Junagadh’s Most Powerful Minister: Diwan Amarji ⚔️👑
Starting his career at just 18 years old by freeing the Uparkot Fort from rebellious Arab troops in 1759, Diwan Amarji Saleh rose to become the Chief Minister of Junagadh. Under his brilliant statecraft and military genius, Junagadh became the premier power in Kathiawad, earning the fear and respect of even the mighty Marathas!
But his immense power sparked jealousy and fear. In a shocking political betrayal, Nawab Mohammad Hamid Khanji I conspired with Kumbhoji of Gondal to assassinate him in the Junagadh palace in 1784. The price for this betrayal? 300,000 Nawanagar 'Koris' paid to the Nawab.

Did you know a 16th-century poet from Junagadh changed the way Ravana spoke about Lord Rama? 📜✨

Around 1509, Kavi Shridhar of Junagadh wrote the famous poem 'Ravan Mandodari Samvad'. In a unique twist to the traditional epic, when Mandodari entreats Ravana to hand over Sita and make peace, Ravana actually praises Lord Rama instead of abusing him!

Audiences of the time absolutely relished this devotional change, even though it somewhat damaged Ravana's heroic stature in the narrative. He also penned the 'Gauri Charitra', a dialogue between Shiva and Bhiladi.

In the 7th Century AD, the renowned pilgrim Yuan Chwang (Hiuen Tsang) visited the capital of Saurashtra (Junagadh). His records reveal incredible facts: 💰 The people were wealthy and were primarily sea-faring traders. 🧘‍♂️ It was a massive hub of Buddhism with over 50 monasteries and 3000 monks, existing alongside 100+ Hindu temples. 🏔️ He described Mount Girnar (Ujjanta) as a lush green mountain where "supernatural Rishis" and saints congregated.
