Kumarakom is a village on Vembanad Lake in the backwaters of Kerala, southern India. It’s laced with canals, Kumarakom is famous of houseboats and backwater tourism. Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary is home to many species including cuckoos and Siberian storks. Nearby, the Bay Island Driftwood Museum displays wooden sculptures. In the lake, Pathiramanal Island is a haven for rare migratory birds. Ancient Thazhathangady Mosque is east of Kumarakom.. Kumarakom is located at 9.35 degrees north and 76.26 degrees east of the equator. Kumarakom is a world-famous tourist destination. It is estimated that more than 17,000 foreign tourists and more than 30,000 domestic tourists visit here every year. Like many places in Kerala, Kumarakom was under the Arabian Sea in ancient times. Kumarakom came into existence during the formation of the Vaikom and Kaduthuruthy regions. Kumarakom is one of the places full of mangrove forests in Kerala. The first paddy fields in Kerala to be created by filling the lake are also in Kumarakom. Kumarakom is called the Netherlands of Kerala because it is located below sea level. In the nearby Thiruvarpp panchayat, the Malarikkal Village Tourist Center, famous for its Ambal Vasantha, is located.
