SHREE JAGANNATH MANDIR/TEMPLE AT RAJAPUR NEAR MAYAPUR
ARRIVAL OF LORD JAGANNATH AT RAJAPUR - 7TH CENTURY AD.
The Legacy :
A 7th Century Legacy
In the 7th Century AD, Lord Jagannath, accompanied by Balabhadra and Subhadra Rani, arrived at Rajapur, near Sridham Mayapur, on the sacred Simantadwip island.
The Story of Faith, Protection, Pastime and Lord's Divine Order:
Legend has it that a demoniac king, Raktabahu, terrorised Odisha, desecrating temples and killing thousands of Sabaras, devotees of Lord Jagannath.
To protect the sacred deities, the Sabaras secretly transported the wooden idols to Rajapur, where they established the revered Jagannath Temple. The site, once home to the Sabaras, is still known as Sabardanga.
A Hidden Treasure :
Over time, the temple and deities faded from public view, but Lord Jagannath remained, watching over Rajapur.
Today, this ancient temple stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and devotion.
THE MIRACULOUS REAPPEARANCE OF LORD JAGANNATH AT RAJAPUR - 16TH CENTURY AD.
In the 16th century, during the time of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, a devoted follower named Jagadish Ganguly lived in a small village near Mayapur. Despite his advanced age, Jagadish would annually travel 900 km to Puri to attend the Rathayatra festival and pay homage to Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra Maharani.
The Divine Intervention :
Tragedy struck when Jagadish lost his sight due to a severe illness. His friends deemed it too perilous for a blind man to undertake the arduous journey to Puri. Heartbroken, Jagadish remained in Nabadwip, lamenting his separation from his beloved Lord.
One fateful night, Lord Jagannath appeared in Jagadish's dream, promising to restore his vision. The Lord instructed Jagadish to bathe in the Bhagirathi (Aadi Ganga) the next morning, where a log of wood would touch his head, granting him sight.
The Carpenter's Miracle :
The Lord further instructed Jagadish to take the wood to a nearby village, where a devotee carpenter, afflicted with leprosy, would carve His divine form. Despite initial reluctance, the carpenter eventually agreed. As he worked, his leprosy miraculously vanished upon completing the carving.
The Divine Deities :
Under Lord Jagannath's guidance, the carpenter created the enchanting deities of Lord Balabhadra and Subhadra Maharani from Neem wood. Jagadish installed the three deities, and the temple flourished.
A Blessing for the Ages :
Through this miraculous series of events, Lord Jagannath blessed devotees with the opportunity to worship Him at this sacred temple, now thriving in the 21st century.
