Lamayuru. Lamayuru monastery is ancient, built into the ‘moonscape’. It has some beautiful frescoes and frightening masks. Visitors can also see the glassed in meditation cave of the Lama Naropa. Lamayuru is a part of the Dri-Gungpa sector in western Ladakh.

📍 MULBEKH MONASTERY, KARGIL
Mulbekh Monastery, consisting of the two gompas, is believed to have been built around 800 years back. The 30 feet tall statue of Maitreya Buddha, carved on an enormous stone slab, overlooks the Leh-Kargil highway.

The statue reflects a mix of Buddhist and Shaivite influences. There are ancient inscriptions located in close proximity to the statue, along with an edict issued by King Lde, to the local people, to abandon the practice of sacrificing goats.

Kargil is second largest city after leh in Ladakh region. Kargil city has been famous for the Kargil war between India and Pakistan in 1999. The war was fought along the now-famous Line of Control or LOC. From city at a distance of 30 minutes there is LOC view point. You can book a cab and reach to the point.
