A print in the dust. A broken twig. An alarm call from a bird. What looks like empty grassland to us is a full conversation to our guides, and they've spent years learning how to listen to it.

That's the difference between seeing wildlife and understanding it.

"Expensive" is the wrong word. "Premium" is the right one.

There's a difference between paying more because something's overpriced, and paying more because it's genuinely rare. The conservancy experience at TBLTC falls firmly in the second camp, this isn't a run-of-the-mill safari itinerary.

The drive out of camp is never a quiet one.

First light usually brings Grant's and Thomson's gazelles grazing close to camp, elands moving in loose herds, and zebras never too far behind. Keep an eye out — hyenas are often spotted right at the start too.

Push further into the reserve for your evening drive and the sightings shift gears: elephants are near-guaranteed, giraffes browse along the tree lines, and if you're patient, the cats come out to play. Lions, cheetahs and leopards call the Mara home — leopards can be shy, but your odds climb fast on an evening drive or a full second day out in the reserve.

This is the rhythm of the Mara. Every drive writes its own story.

It rained the day we arrived. And somehow, that's the detail we remember most fondly.

Because within minutes, there was hot water waiting, a safari shower on offer, and a warmth from the Masai hosts that no weather could dampen. Three meals a day, each one tailored to what we loved, in a location so remote, we didn't think this kind of care was possible.
