भीषण गर्मी की लहर ने यूरोप के ज़्यादातर हिस्सों में सूखा पैदा कर दिया है, जिससे नदियों का जलस्तर रिकॉर्ड निचले स्तर पर पहुँच गया है। डेन्यूब नदी में, दूसरे विश्व युद्ध के दौरान डूबे जर्मन जहाज़ पहले के सूखे के समय भी दिखाई दिए थे, लेकिन इस गर्मी में, जो मलबे पहले बस थोड़ी देर के लिए ही दिखते थे, वे अब पानी से पूरी तरह बाहर दिखाई दे रहे हैं। लगभग 200 जहाज़ों के काफ़िले का हिस्सा रहे ये ऐतिहासिक मलबे अतीत की एक डरावनी निशानी हैं—और साथ ही भविष्य के लिए एक चेतावनी भी: CNN BBC News India National Geographic

Two islands incredibly close to each other, separated by only 5 km of sea, and in winter, you can walk through the frozen water to get from one to the other. Imagine that you start your journey at 10:00 in the morning, and expect to arrive in about an hour. When you arrive, the clock shows an illogical time. The islands are located on both sides of the International Date Line, with a time difference of 22 hours. Walking the distance takes you practically to a different day. These wonderful islands are located between America and Russia. They are called Yesterday's Little Diomede Island and Tomorrow's Big Diomede Island.

Mount Everest is the world's tallest mountain measured from sea level, at 8,848.86 meters. But the real giant is Mauna Kea in Hawaii. From its base on the ocean floor to its summit, it measures 10,210 meters, surpassing Mount Everest by about 1,400 meters. Only a portion of Mauna Kea rises above the water, reaching 4,207 meters above sea level. Mount Everest is still the tallest mountain on Earth, but Mauna Kea is the real giant when you consider its total height: a giant hidden in the Pacific Ocean.
