There are many distinctive terms used for timber flooring because it is one of its kinds in flooring and have had been used from time immemorial in homes and offices.

Timber flooring is commonly also known as planking because it makes use of hard board wood planks. Planking is preferred over many other types of flooring due to the aesthetic appeal it provides to the interiors. The color and types of wood used rely on the demand and budget of the customer.

Types of timber flooring

Timber Flooring Hardwood flooring is known as tongue and groove flooring system which is installed for its wonderful durability and ever lasting beauty. The hardwood tongue and groove flooring is designed to be installed directly onto the floor or over concrete and also can be nailed onto the old wooden flooring. Types of wood installed have three grades i.e. select, natural and standard grades.

Parquetry Parquetry is another type of timber flooring which is hardwearing and can be avail in two styles that is mosaic and block. The two styles of parquetry are arranged in different patterns and features which customer desires. Different grades of wood are used in this style of flooring such as alpine ash, blackbutt, Tasmanian oak and many more.

Strip flooring Strip wooden flooring makes use of wooden planks arranged in narrow tongued and grooved hardboards which are nailed into the timber joists. Strip flooring is generally laid parallel to the length of the room.

Wood mosaic flooring Wood mosaic flooring is quite similar to wood block as arranged in herringbone or basket weave patterns followed by mounted on using aluminum foil in order to form panels. The mosaics installed are indeed very small with the thickness of 10 mm.

Laminate flooring Laminate flooring is altogether new to the wooden flooring as it only gives the illusion of wooden floor but quite cheap and durable than wood. Laminate timber flooring doesn't subject to problems like contraction, checking and cupping.

Bamboo flooring Bamboos are considered durable, reliable and versatile for its strength when it comes to flooring and have become popular among customers. Bamboo are chosen more over timber because it grows faster than wood and most economical and environment friendly.

Installation of timber flooring

Several steps have to be taken before installing wooden floor. It is important that the intended surface is made smooth and level before installation. The floor can be leveled up with some agent or sanded or filled to make it flat.

Timber flooring is installed after the construction of home or renovation and several preparations done in home.

The floorboards should be laid on the floor in randomly staggered configuration. Consider two factors to determine the direction in which timber has to be run. Firstly chose the longest wall and lay parallel to the wall, secondly make sure that some natural source of light fall on boards.

Start measuring the width of the floor and ensure that measurement is taken wall to wall at right angle to run the board.

Black builder's plastic should be laid with the thickness of 0.2 mm which will act as barrier against moisture and seam must be covered with plastic tape.

The underplayed flooring must be rolled so that every end and sides fit properly against the walls. Make sure the seams between lengths joins together from the end so as to avoid overlap.

Place the board with groove side facing the wall followed by second board but before you do that, apply good amount of glue to the top of tongue of the end join so that the joints are firm.

Last board is applied if necessary and a gap of 8 mm has to be left around the perimeter of all walls. Now start with second row using cut-off from the former row and continue in the same process until the installation completes.

The final boards need to be cut lengthwise and to mark the width of cut, place final board on the top o last board. Make use of floorboard off-cut, slide the off-cut along the wall along the wall scribing with a pencil placed against the wall and cut off the board along the line.

However every room can be set with stylish tinted rugs as per the interior of each room and individual taste.

Wool rugs have replaced the traditional carpets and other simple rugs made of fabric because wool is soft and cozy combining with the features like style and luxury which they may impart to your room. Colors are most powerful in influencing the human mind and body. It is also the least expensive, easiest and quickest to use, to change and to create a decorating scheme.

Oikos Enlightens on how colors influence Vastu/Vaastu Shastra?

In Vedic periods, all colors were taken out from vegetables and flowers, which were more permanent in shade, soothing to eye and natural tint. At an early period in human history the symbolic use of colors was made. During early period Heart, which was the seat of life and the blood was identified with life and consciousness and was colored red. Yellows were possibly the color of fire and white that of the day. Vaastu Shastra provides vital guidelines as to how to decorate our homes etc. in decent manner to derive maximum delight with dignity and décor.

According to some Vaastukars, the color schemes should conform to the raashi (constellation / zodiac sign) of the owner to bring good luck and happiness.

Zodiac sign and colors suggested:
Aries-Coral red
Taurus-Milky white
Gemini-Green
Cancer-Rose red, pearl white
Leo-Ruby red, dim white
Virgo-Emerald green
Libra-Cement color, milky white
Scorpio-Pink, coral red
Sagittarius-Golden yellow
Capricorn-Dim red
Aquarius-Pink, blue
Pisces-Yellow, pure white

If a room has poor daylight, it should be painted in light color and if a room gets good amount of natural light throughout the day, it can be painted in some deep color. If a room has only a North window, which admits cold light, we should not use blue on the walls. If a room gets much direct sunlight, it is not advisable to paint the walls yellow or peach. It is nearly better to have ceilings white and the ceiling temperature should be less than the human body temperature. Some scholars suggest different color to the direction the building faces. They are really the colors of the planets governing these directions.

Direction and colors suggested:
East (Sun) -Shining white
West (Saturn)-Blue
North (Mercury)-All Greens
South (Mars)-Pink, Coral Red
North-East (Jupiter)-Golden Yellow
South-West (Rahu)-All Greens
South-East (Venus)-Silver White
North-West (Moon)-White

Color contrast in value is perhaps the most important factor in a composition or a design. Maximum contrast is obtained by the use of colors of extremely strong chromes. A strong yellow on a black field is an excellent example of maximum visibility. A bright strong yellowish red would be considered as a powerful color. The color of an object depends upon the light it emits or sends back to an eye. Opposite contrast colors are quickly changed when it mixed as for black which makes colors both brighter and lighter in looks. Surrounding an intense color with a Grey increase the apparent colorfulness of the intense color making. It appears even brighter or brilliant. Surrounded by yellow, a Grey color may appear slightly blue. Surrounded by red, it may appear slightly green and surrounding by Grey with a bright color on other hand may influence the eye to discern in the greying of the complementary of the bright colors.

Colors and Vastu One must always bear in mind that no individual is completely white (good) or black (bad), but is an amalgam of the two Grey. A sensible good blending can create a forceful creation.

A particular color can activate or can control human glands by different bodily functions. Such as for good appetizer or to give excitement for the low blood pressure patient, a light limited soothing color atmosphere is recommended. Similarly Blue color is to stop overeating habits. For a high blood pressure patient, a light limited soothing color atmosphere is recommended. For quicker healing, green color is used in hospitals. For a good healthy, tasty food, golden yellow or tinted brown color is recommended.

Colors effect our body and mind very much. The purest and most thoughtful minds are those, which love, colors the most. The cool colors are blue sea or mainly blue in cast. The warm colors are red or mainly blue in cast. The warm colors are red and yellow in cast. Red make you feel gay while man can work best when surrounded by blue, but too strong blue or red cause depression. People often feel cold in blue room and warm in a red room. It is the color that makes them feel that way.

STUDENTS : TIPS FOR ATTAINING A BETTER RESULT

Many a times students complain that they are not able to concentrate, learn or retain what they have read .The remedy to these problems was formulated by our ancestors in the form of the directional science of Vaastu Shastra. For students eager to do well, here are a few techniques , following which the students can achieve success in their studies and obviously bring about a positive changes in grade and will come off with flying colors.

The room to be chosen for study should be in the east, North or the North-East direction of the house. These directions improve the absorption power and increase the knowledge content. Along with that if the door of the room is also in either of these directions, the result turns out to be the best.

The study room should have images of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Saraswati.

The books in the study chamber should be kept in the South-West, South or West direction and not in the North – East.In addition to that, if the north – east direction bears heavy weight it shall pressurize the students’ mind.

Furthermore, if the student studies on the table and chair, the table should not stick to the wall. It should be at least 3 feet away from it .

Along with that unnecessary books should not be piled up on the table. Only the books which are needed should be kept on the table.

Load of books on the table create unnecessary mental pressure on the mind. The study books should be placed in the cupboard in the cabinet rather than in the open. And if the shutter of the cupboard is kept shut, the flow of energy is constantly maintained.

If the learner makes use of the Table lamp then the lamp should be kept in the South-East corner of the desk. Plus if it is a square table then nothing like it. Further, the size of the study table should not be too big nor too small. It should be just the size which is comfortable for the working of the student. A big sized table diminishes the working capacity, whereas the small table gives rise to depression.

Moreover, if possible, the walls of the study room should be light orange in color as it is very auspicious and enhances the wishing power as well as supports the speedy progress of mind.

Along with that, at the same time of study, the learner should use a pyramid cape as it proves to be extremely beneficial. Not only that it embellishes the remembering power and absorption.

The student should ensure that after studying when they go off to sleep, their head is in the South direction. It helps in maintaining the magnetic balance of the body and the earth.

And last but not the least, a pendulum watch is a must in each and every study room.

Great importance is given for the decoration of the house with the paintings, idols and especially the main door decoration.

Oikos Enlightens on how to decorate the house with Vastu Shastra.

The main door was considered very important in ancient days and even today as the people used to think that all the prosperity and money comes from the main door.

Main door decoration: Care should be taken to decorate the main door. The objects of the main door as prescribed in the text are:

Kula Devata: The image of the family deity. Its dimension should not be more than one hasta (18") of length.
Two Prathiharis (Sentinels or guards): Well decorated in ornaments bearing staff and swords in their hands, well clothed, glowing with youth and beauty, along with lady Prathiharinis and placed on both the sides of the door.
Dhaatri (a dwarfish nurse): her maid companions should follow it, the happy jesters i.e. Vidhushakas.
Shanka and Padmanidhi emitting coins.
The Asthamangala: on the seat of lotus wearing a sacred garland of eight auspicious symbols.

Cow with her calf and well ornamented with flower garlands etc.
Motifs of serpents, giants, owl, wild animals, elephants, daityas, nudes, fight between God and demons, hunting, house on fire, trees devoid of flowers should not be placed on the main door.
Nowadays people in their over enthusiasm to decorate the house use figures of Gods like Krishna, Ganesh, Vishnu etc. and also many other prohibited motifs.
The following shlok explains the rules relating the above things:

"Grahe Na Ramayan bhatatha hawan chitram kurupanahvamindra jalikam . Shilocha yaarnyamayam sadhasuram bheeshmam kurutha krindhanaram thvanambaram.
Vaarah shaardhul shiva prudhakavo grudhabi golukapothavayasaa Sashye nagothadhi vakadhi patrino vichitratha no sharane shubhavaha."

Meaning - To display the following in a house is not good - War scenes from Ramayan and Mahabharata, Fight scenes using swords, Inderjall (magic) scenes, Stone or wooden statues of terrifying giants or demons, Scenes of weeping and crying people in tears. Paintings, potraits, statues: Decorative lights, chandeliers, bookshelf, vases, flower pots and furniture etc. should be meticulously and tastefully selected and placed in appropriate settings so that they look attractive and follow vaastu principles etc.

The pictures, painting or models of the animals like pigs, snake and birds like eagle, owl, crow, pigeons, vultures should not be placed in a house.
All pictures or wooden or metal figures of wild beasts like tigers, lions, wolves, bears, jackals, and wild asses, hounds etc. should be avoided.
The heavy furniture should be placed in the South West side of the room and the light furniture can accommodate in any corner.
Symbols like Swastik, Om, Rangoli decorations stop the entry of evil spirits and evil influences in the house.
The photographs of the ancestors should be placed on the south western side of the house.
The clock should be placed on the Eastern, Western or Northern wall.
Installation of Idols in homes and other buildings: A pooja or worship place is a must in a home; it is better to have one in office, factory, schools, colleges and other buildings too. The appropriate place is the north-east corner of the building and if not then the north-east corner of the room in house and central chowk or garden or lawn of other buildings. The deities like Brahma, Vishnu, Maheshwar, Surya, Inder should face east or West and four-headed Brahma, six-headed kartikeya, five faced Shiv can be placed facing any direction. Hanuman ji should face southwest.

Whatever is exhibited should be pleasing to the eyes and mind bringing joy and cheer to those who view them; aesthetic and cultural aspects also should be borne in mind, while selecting decorative pieces or paintings and pictures and placing them in our home.

A few decades ago, offices were treated like machines, catering only to organizational requirements, with little consideration given to the ‘people’ factor which played almost no role in determining the design of the office.

Oikos Enlightens on the work space.

Offices are trying to move away from airless, box-like rooms, to better ventilated, well lit, ergonomically sensitive spaces. Increasingly these are being designed by professionals who, apart from seeing that the spaces work with optimum utilization are able to add an aesthetic touch.

Nowadays offices are considered to be a status of a person. In India, previously the offices were either a part of the home or the royal court. The equipment that made these function were no more than the pen , paper and ink. The first sign of automation or mechanization came with the introduction of the typewriter in the nineteenth century. Then the second bit of mechanization came with the telephone and the cyclostyling machines. In the fifties and sixties, offices were rather simply organized. A very strong hierarchical system prevailed and the office was divided between the bosses who had their rooms , the junior managers who had their small personal cabins, and the general staff who sat in the hall. Then the revolution started with the introduction of mainframe computer in seventies and then there was no looking back, these were followed by mini computers, then with the arrival of personal computers in early eighties and the office set-up began to change dramatically.

The strong hierarchical system was no longer relevant, and a new office order, namely the open office, came into being. The open office had light, air and privacy for all. Typically low height partitions were erected between pieces of furniture to give visual privacy but they were not able to provide the acoustic privacy and the noise was the biggest hurdle. The open plan system can accommodate a wide range of functions from reception to conference room. Here, both executives and staff are placed in an open area divided into individual or shared workstations, defined by independent storage units or partitions of varying heights. The heights of the dividing panels will depend on their function. Low panels upto 4’, create a feeling of privacy when seated, yet allow one to see or reach over when standing. 5’ high panels offer more visual privacy and though the extra tall can still see over are usually high enough for Indian users. Taller panels can be used to define different departmental areas. Partitions can be useful in concealed old unmatched furniture so that this does not clash with modern additions, which would ruin the aesthetic appeal of the office

Then there were so much developments in the designs and now is the trend of modular offices. Designing new offices involves making thousands of decisions . Some of these are easy, others may take more time. Then the difference between a well designed office and a poorly designed one is enormous, get it wrong and you are faced with high overheads, little design flexibility and worst of all – the unhappy staff and in the last the work suffers. Space in the office as always at a premium. The key is to use it as well as you can. By coming up with an adaptable partition system to customize your floor space, and full filling all the furniture needs, the designer can help you maximize the use of the space available. In recent years, India has been waking up to another genre of furniture that has long been popular in the west – well made modular furniture in wood and particle board. So now the question comes, what exactly is the modular furniture ?? Quite simply, furniture that can be broken down into modules and put back together at will. Machine made for the most part , it is devoid of frills. The advantage of this kind of furniture – often referred to in the trade as CKD (Complete Knock Down) are many.

- For the largest segment, going modular is the key to better living.
- Because it can be dismantled, it is ideal for people who have to move a lot.
- It is cost-effective and convenient, and gives one the freedom to play around with color and form.
- It being light and simply structured, is ideally suited to the match box sized dimensions of modern day apartments.

The atmosphere in the office can greatly influence work output and an increasing emphasis is being placed on making the modern office as pleasant as it is functional. This is not always easy, given the increasingly smaller work spaces to contend with. In such a set-up, going modular is a great idea. Stylish, color co-ordinated contemporary and both environment friendly and practical modular furniture is here to stay. Most furniture lines come is a range of models, to be selected as per individual requirements and budgets. With multiple work surfaces and storage areas above and below the working levels, space is used very effectively. One can add draw units ,cabinets, display panels and pin boards whenever and wherever one needs them. All these systems are easy to install, upgrade or relocate and they adapt well to all modern communication data and computer equipment.

Thus, Image is a subtle component that is affected by several variables, some of which may not be possible to change; like the location itself. Image also conveys an important message to those who work in the office. Design requirements will vary from office to office, according to function, organizational style, budget and of course, the image the company wants to present to the world. A pleasant work environment is the management’s way of showing that it cares about its people.

People enjoy making their home a special room for having fun watching movies and other audio visuals. The vogue of media houses has trend everywhere today however, the number of people owing a home theatre is more in west than in India.

But what is the exact difference between a simple well-equipped home theatre and truly media room that will make your movies more enjoyable with a sense of true theatre. A well specialize dedicated media room is managed to view movies and a high end media room provides variety of uses and dedicated home theatre have certain requirement that must stand out.

Home theatre’s screen

For true the feel of theatre it is important to install a big screen in your media room. A big screen with big size of about 6 feet wide is a pretty good and appropriate.

For larger room 80 or 90 inches would be the justified for dedicated home theatre systems. Do not overlook this important aspect of media room as the TV or screen you are going to pick must be of right size and angle. Modern LCD screens are indistinguishable from each other with big black rectangle.

Home theatre power conditioner and battery back up

Home theatre power conditioners are important if you are seriously planning to make a media room. They are also known as AC generators and usually help to improve the sound quality of system and protect your equipment.

Power backup is always needed with electronic systems and necessarily in an area with frequent blackout and fluctuation.

Selection of room for home theatre

The important task of choosing a room which can be converted into media room should be done with utmost care.

Never pick a room which is too big for this purpose. By selecting larger you may be inviting professionals and spending loads of money or figuring out the best place for speakers and other elements to improve the sound. The big the room the more efficient sound system you may need.

The size of the room determines the size of the screen as well.

Avoid taking square room which tends to produce weird sound.

Rectangle rooms are best to choose if you are going to place the screen on the narrow side.

Make sure the wall behind the screen should not have any windows or doors.

You can also install curtains and dark colors are best in this room.

Avoid glossy surfacing they can create a lot of glare.

Make sure the ceiling should not be high as sound may trapped in the upper part of ceilings and can echo.

Lighting for media room

Lighting is another very important source in home theatre and try to avoid natural ambient light in your home theatre.

It is always preferred to create media rooms in basement and if this option is not available then you can put around heavy curtains and draperies to restrict the light coming inside.

Install several lights in this room which is ideal to accommodate the needs of the moment. The lights should always have a low level during watching movie.

Go for floor level track lights the ones you see in theatres.

Furniture for media room

When we talk of home theatres only comfortable chairs come in our mind. As like in theatres we always think for big soft and comfy chairs to install in this room that any being would love to spend hours in this room.

It is not essential to put much of furniture pieces into this room. Also avoid shiny surfaces chairs such as leather to prohibit the glare.

Micro fiber will be ideal and eco-friendly and the light will not be
bouncing all over the room which might cause fatigue and disturbance.

Consider big bulky and oversized chairs wherein everyone can be fitted. Soft cushioned big chairs also best in home theatres where one can stretch out comfortably.

If you are planning to purchase trays and tables for this room always go for unpolished ones or if you happened to buy mistakenly cover them whenever possible.
