At first, the idea sounds strange.

Why would someone marry a tree before cutting it?

But the deeper we looked, the less it felt like superstition, and the more it felt like respect.

In several Indian communities, trees have long been seen as living beings that provide shade, food, shelter, medicine, and life itself. Before cutting one down, rituals were performed almost like a wedding ceremony.

Not because people believed the tree literally needed marriage.

But because the ritual slowed the act down.
It added thought, responsibility, and emotion to something that could otherwise become careless.

The tree was acknowledged before it was taken away.

And perhaps that is what makes these traditions so interesting today.

Long before sustainability, climate conversations, or conservation policies, communities had already built cultural ways of reminding themselves that nature was never meant to be treated casually.

In many parts of Rajasthan, blackbuck and chinkara move freely through Bishnoi villages.

Not because they are protected by fences or fear of the law.

But because, for the Bishnoi community, protecting wildlife is part of their faith.

The community follows the teachings of Guru Jambheshwar, also known as Jambhoji, who, over 500 years ago, laid down principles centred around living in harmony with nature. Trees, animals, and all living beings were to be protected and respected.

That belief continues even today.

Animals are fed, cared for, and allowed to move freely through villages. A blackbuck here is not seen as wildlife passing through. It is seen as part of the same shared world.

And perhaps that is why moments like this feel so natural.

Long before coexistence became a conservation idea, communities like these were already living it.

Not every forest story roars.

Some quietly stain your fingers red.

We stumbled upon a patch of wild ginger in the forests of Kumaon, crushing its dried seeds out of curiosity and watching a deep crimson colour slowly appear on our hands.

Turns out, it was Wild Ginger, Zingiber capitatum.

Used traditionally in parts of the Himalaya for its medicinal properties, the plant is known for its aromatic roots and is often associated with remedies for digestion, inflammation, and cold weather ailments. The striking red colour from the seeds is believed to come from natural protective pigments within the plant itself.

And somehow, that felt very Kumaon.

The more time you spend in these forests, the more you realise the wild is not only about the big sightings.

Sometimes it is the smell of crushed seeds, damp earth after rain, or a tiny forest herb hidden beneath towering trees that stays with you the longest.

The mountains always seem to hide stories in the smallest things.

Some voices don’t just describe the natural world.
They change the way we see it.

For decades, David Attenborough has taken us into forests, oceans, and landscapes we may never visit, and made them feel familiar.

Not through spectacle, but through quiet observation.
Through patience. Through storytelling.

On his 100th birthday, it feels right to pause and acknowledge that many of us began noticing nature a little more closely because of him.

And perhaps that’s where it all begins.
With noticing.

On International Leopard Day, a story from Jawai.

Here, the leopard is not seen as a threat.
For the Rabari community, it is part of a shared belief.

Deeply devoted to Lord Shiva, they see the leopard as sacred.
When a goat is taken, it is not treated as a loss, but as an offering.

There is no retaliation. No conflict.
Just an understanding that this land is shared.

Over time, this has shaped something rare.
A balance where both continue to exist, without fear.

At Chitai Golu Devta Temple, faith is written down.

Golu Devta, worshipped as the God of Justice in Kumaon, is believed to hear those who feel unheard.
People come here with petitions, written like formal applications, asking for resolution in matters where the system may have failed them.

Some leave letters.
Some attach legal or property papers.

And when their wish is fulfilled, they return.
With a bell.

Over time, thousands of these bells have filled the temple.
Each one marking a prayer answered.

It feels less like a place of ritual, and more like a court where people still believe they will be heard.

But somehow, the numbers didn’t matter as much as the moment.

There’s something about Kasar Devi you notice before you understand.

People come here to sit, and somehow, things slow down.

In the 1890s, Swami Vivekananda meditated in a cave here, long before there was any explanation for it.

Decades later, in 1958, scientists identified the Van Allen radiation belt.

Kasar Devi is believed to fall along one such geomagnetic zone.

Maybe it’s science. Maybe it’s something else.
But the stillness here feels real.

Meet the most unimpressed face in the wild — the Pallas’s cat.

Built for survival in some of the harshest landscapes on earth, this elusive high-altitude cat is a master of stillness, camouflage, and patience.

• Always looks annoyed — it is just how they are built
• Among the densest fur coats in the cat world
• Blends so well into rocky terrain, it disappears in plain sight
• One of the few small cats with round pupils
• Hunts low, slow, and with precision — no chasing
• Compact, stocky body designed to conserve heat
• Has a protective third eyelid for dust and wind
• Thrives at elevations up to 5,000 metres
• Relies on stealth, not speed
• Extremely difficult to care for in captivity

In a world that moves fast, the Pallas’s cat survives by doing the exact opposite.
